By turning down the alleged payday, St. Clair was able to sit for an interview in \u201cMusk,\u201d a new documentary from <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/alex-gibney\/\" id=\"auto-tag_alex-gibney\" data-tag=\"alex-gibney\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Gibney<\/a> that seeks to make sense of the controversial billionaire who has outsized influence on the world in which we live.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSt. Clair participated in the doc to \u201cset the example for my kids that we should never take being materially comfortable that we\u2019re speaking the truth,\u201d she said. St. Clair gained prominence as a right-wing political commentator who advocated for conservative and anti-trans politics. She is now expressing her regret for platforming those beliefs, which she chalked up to her youth and confidants at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI got involved with Republican politics when I was 18 after I met Charlie Kirk, and there was an air of ignorance,\u201d said St. Clair, who is now 28. \u201cBut that ignorance does not excuse any role in that. I hope the risk that I\u2019m taking now in speaking out and trying to fight back at least helps a little bit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibney, an Oscar-winning documentarian, has investigated corrupt corporations (\u201cEnron: The Smartest Guys in the Room\u201d), sexual abuse coverups in the Catholic Church (\u201cMea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God\u201d), Scientology (\u201cGoing Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Disbelief\u201d) and alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election (\u201cAgents of Chaos\u201d). Gibney began working on a film about the tech titan and world\u2019s richest man, with an estimated net worth of $900 billion through ventures including SpaceX and Tesla, back in 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe thing that struck me most, particularly early on, there was a tremendous sense of fear of talking \u2014 both among people who were his critics, colleagues and friends,\u201d said Gibney. \u201cI talked to many, many, many people. Many declined to speak.\u201d Gibney and St. Clair were joined at the press conference by another interview subject, tech journalist Zo\u00eb Schiffer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMusk,\u201d which premieres at the festival on Tuesday, is nearly four hours long \u2014 and Gibney joked he didn\u2019t set out to make such a long movie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe intended to make a shorter film before Musk became wrapped in the career of Donald Trump and the United States,\u201d Gibney said, adding the first thing he did was reach out to Musk, who declined to be interviewed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cMusk\u201d promises to reframe all we know about him, \u201crevealing that the so-called \u2018visionary genius\u2019 is little more than the 21st-century reincarnation of a confidence man,\u201d according to the synopsis. Musk himself has said that perceived reality may be nothing more than a simulation, and Gibney argues \u201ceven his most heralded accomplishments are rife with illusion and misdirection.\u201d Musk\u2019s recent ventures include buying Twitter (and renaming the social media platform X) and starting xAI and its chatbot Grok. Although Musk didn\u2019t participate in Gibney\u2019s doc, he long ago called the film a \u201chit piece.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tGibney called Musk a \u201cvery dangerous\u201d man and expressed a deep worry about Musk\u2019s unwillingness to show concern about other people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI would say he has a very difficult time with empathy, especially cognitive empathy, which is putting himself in the shoes of others,\u201d Gibney said. \u201cHe seems incapable of doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAdded St. Clair, \u201cHe makes a conscious choice to not put himself on other people\u2019s shoes.
