Prince Harry<\/a> and Meghan Markle<\/a> have responded after King Charles<\/a> issued a letter to clear up “confusion” about the couple’s royal roles now that they’re in the UK.<\/p>\n

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex haven’t been working members of the British Royal family since 2020, and the King recently reminded everyone of that fact.<\/p>\n

However, a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan claimed the couple was “a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance”, according to the BBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sources told\u00a0PEOPLE<\/a>\u00a0that Harry and Meghan’s team was informed about the guidance just over an hour before it was sent out.<\/p>\n

They reportedly sent back several questions to the Palace about the wording of the letter.<\/p>\n

But by the time the team got in touch with Harry, the memo had already been sent out.<\/p>\n

What was in King Charles’ letter about Harry and Meghan?<\/p>\n

The letter outlined that Harry and Meghan were private citizens and would not be using the titles His or Her Royal Highness.<\/p>\n

It was issued after the Palace received numerous enquiries about what Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK meant for their public status.<\/p>\n

PEOPLE<\/a> added that it was also to get ahead of an anticipated series of charitable engagements that Harry had planned in the UK before the move was announced.<\/p>\n

Some had wondered whether the Duke would be appearing at these engagements as himself or representing the Royal family.<\/p>\n

“The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” it said, according to the BBC<\/a> and PEOPLE<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The letter was issued by a top Palace official, the Lord Chamberlain, on behalf of King Charles, and was sent to the UK government, the military and police, and other UK institutions.<\/p>\n

“To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that the following information be shared,” it said.<\/p>\n

“It is well known that in January 2020, the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family.<\/p>\n

“This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.”<\/p>\n

It also said that the Palace was not the place for future inquiries about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.<\/p>\n

“All correspondence and administrative questions relating to the couple should be sent directly to their office, which will continue to operate separately from The Royal Household,” the letter said.<\/p>\n

While some Harry and Meghan fans will be hoping their return to the UK will heal the deep rift between them and the broader Royal family, Sharon Williams told Yahoo Lifestyle it’s unlikely.<\/p>\n

The royal commentator explained that proximity won’t automatically equal remediation.<\/p>\n

“I simply don’t see happy families,” she said.<\/p>\n

“There is a lot of history and hurt within the family that would make a close relationship difficult, having been so publicly critical of members of his own family<\/p>\n

“Time will tell, but I should expect distance for the time being.”<\/p>\n
