{"id":119953,"date":"2025-05-21T14:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-21T14:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/119953\/"},"modified":"2025-05-21T14:00:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T14:00:08","slug":"liverpool-serious-as-embarrassing-british-transfer-records-threatened","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/119953\/","title":{"rendered":"Liverpool &#8216;serious&#8217; as embarrassing British transfer records threatened"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Liverpool have been linked with a British record \u00a3126m move for Florian Wirtz as we all pretend that he will not eventually join Bayern Munich.<\/p>\n<p>In echoes of Jude Bellingham from two years ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/liverpool-secret-meeting-usa-serious-wirtz-plan-break-british-transfer-record-leverkusen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Liverpool are keen to be part of the conversation for a \u00a3100m-plus player<\/strong><\/a> but we fully expect it to be too rich for their blood.<\/p>\n<p>But history could still be made this summer as most of the supposed \u2018Big Six\u2019 chase world-class strikers, so here\u2019s a look at the current and five previous British transfer record-holders.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moises Caicedo to Chelsea (\u00a3115m \u2013 August 2023)<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/chelsea-maresca-caicedo-best-world-tottenham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enzo Maresca\u2019s suggestion that Caicedo is the \u201cbest defensive midfielder in the world\u201d<\/a><\/strong> after a 1-0 win against *checks notes* Tottenham Hotspur was a bit of a stretch, but the 23-year-old has fared much better post-\u00a3100m transfer than most of his counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>The former Liverpool target\u2019s second season at Stamford Bridge has been far stronger than his first and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/feature-chelsea-ranking-todd-boehlys-chelsea-signings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>he\u2019s one of the few huge Todd Boehly-era signings to pay off<\/strong><\/a>. He\u2019s not quite justified the \u00a3100m player tag yet, but he\u2019s getting there. He is Chelsea\u2019s player of a poor season.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enzo Fernandez to Chelsea (\u00a3106m \u2013 January 2023)<br \/><\/strong>This has comfortably been Fernandez\u2019s best season to date at Chelsea, but that is not saying much. Like Caicedo, he needs to produce the goods more consistently if he\u2019s to be considered an elite midfielder instead of one who\u2019s purely very good on his day.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandez has found himself at the centre of transfer speculation concerning a deal that won\u2019t come to fruition, with it incredibly difficult to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/real-madrid-news-enzo-fernandez-talks-revealed-chelsea-price-plummets-70-per-cent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>what he would add to what is already a well-stocked Real Madrid midfield<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jack Grealish to Manchester City (\u00a3100m \u2013 August 2021)<br \/><\/strong>We love Grealish, and you should too. He\u2019s clearly a brilliant bloke and a gifted footballer, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/man-city-keep-or-sell-grealish-ederson-gundogan-all-leave-as-guardiola-keeps-stones-silva-mon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>even we have to admit that his time at Man City is coming to an end<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Grealish\u2019s immense form heavily contributed to Man City\u2019s historic Treble season in 2022\/23, but he\u2019s not come close to matching this overwhelming peak in prior or subsequent campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Pep Guardiola\u2019s new favourite toy \u2013 Omar Marmoush \u2013 is the third attack-minded signing to outshine the England international after Jeremy Doku and Savinho and he desperately needs a new home to rediscover the magical performances he produced in his second season and for Aston Villa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MORE TRANSFER NONSENSE ON F365\u2026<\/strong><br \/>\ud83d\udc49\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/arsenal-gyokeres-told-sporting-team-mates-transfer-next-week-confirmed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>What Viktor Gyokeres has told team-mates after claims Arsenal transfer \u2018will become official next week\u2019<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\ud83d\udc49 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/liverpool-transfer-vetoed-barcelona-dressing-room-two-concerns-disappearing-reds-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Liverpool transfer \u2018vetoed\u2019 by Barcelona \u2018dressing room\u2019 in \u2018disagreement\u2019 on \u00a371m Reds star<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\ud83d\udc49\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/transfers-premier-league-five-year-net-spend-man-utd-man-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Premier League net spend table: Liverpool below West Ham over last five years!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paul Pogba to Manchester United (\u00a389m \u2013 August 2016)<br \/><\/strong>Even with Man Utd\u2019s woeful downfall this season, you are hard-pressed to find a former Red Devils player-cum-pundit desperate enough to call for Pogba to be given a \u201cthird chance\u201d at Old Trafford, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/man-utd-advancing-first-summer-signing-ineos-told-reason-give-pogba-third-chance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Dwight Yorke one exception<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pogba is arguably the most talented footballer on this list, so the massive investment of \u00a389m to re-sign him from Juventus could have been justified at the time. But the story of his second stint at Man Utd \u2013 marred by manager fallouts and a stinking attitude \u2013 should give him no hope of another chance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/man-utd-transfers-ineos-betting-on-free-signings-key-target-pl-star-five-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>even with Sir Jim Ratcliffe supposedly \u2018betting on\u2019 free agents this summer<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angel Di Maria to Manchester United (\u00a359.7m \u2013 August 2014)<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/ranking-all-45-manchester-united-signings-since-ferguson-left\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Another contender for being Man Utd\u2019s worst signing post-Sir Alex Ferguson<\/a><\/strong>, Di Maria is a fine example of an individual who proves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/neville-admits-poor-advice-man-utd-transfer-targets-88-5m-success-claim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the club has become a \u201cgraveyard for coaches and players\u201d<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Di Maria joined Man Utd riding the crest of a wave after shining in the previous season\u2019s Champions League final, but he flopped at Old Trafford and could not leave quickly enough, joining PSG after a single season in the Premier League.<\/p>\n<p>His success after exiting Man Utd suggests the club were the problem, not him, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/feature-players-left-man-utd-ranked-post-ferguson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>there are only two Old Trafford departees post-Ferguson who have done better<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fernando Torres to Chelsea (\u00a350m \u2013 January 2011)<br \/><\/strong>\u201cThis was the no-brainer. This was the banker, this was the one that couldn\u2019t fail, this was the one that\u2019s never failed.\u201d Well, it did\u2026\u00a0<strong><br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Chelsea appeared to pull off a major coup when they snatched Liverpool\u2019s goal machine from their arch-rivals, but it turned out his legs had gone as he only scored 20 goals in 110 Premier League games for the Blues.
