One person needs to brainstorm with others, while another needs to be completely alone. One person can go to a coffee shop and tune out all the voices, while another needs quiet to hear their thoughts.

Nicole Kidman’s life is busy. Whether she’s spending time with her husband, Keith Urban, and family, off to a film festival or to make her next movie, she doesn’t have much extra time in her days. So it is no surprise that she finds the best time to ignite her creativity is in the middle of the night.

She Opens Up About When She Does Her Best Writing

On May 18, Kidman received Kering’s 10th Women in Motion award at the Cannes Film Festival. Before accepting the award, she spoke with Angelique Jackson, revealing a bit about her nighttime writing rituals.

“I do it at 3 a.m. — writing sessions,” she admitted. “I wake up and I’ll write something. Be it a dream or something circulating in my head and my life and my heart at that time. I think 2 and 3 a.m. is a very, very ripe time for things to happen because you’re in that slightly removed state from reality, but your dreams and your psyche are very, very there and very present.”

“I write down stuff a lot, I have ideas that I either then share with a director and go, ‘why don’t you go and create something in this vein’ — and that just comes through decades and decades of life, and observing and working with some of the greatest minds,” Kidman said. “And I’m very interested in philosophy and poetry. And so that, of course, is very, very helpful for, you know, creating a story.”

“But I also just don’t quite have the time,” she surmised.

So, can we expect to see any of Kidman’s writing anytime soon? “No, but I always say ‘No,’ and then I turn around and change my mind,” she laughed.

Kidman Says ‘Practical Magic’ Sequel is ‘Fun and Witchy’

Kidman briefly touched on Practical Magic 2, which will be released in theaters on September 18, 2026. The original 1998 film was directed by Griffin Dunne, who told Variety in 2024 that he would be an executive producer on the follow-up. The film sees Kidman and Sandra Bullock join forces with Susanne Bier for the sequel. Biers directed Kidman in The Undoing and The Perfect Couple, and Bullock in Bird Box.

“Sandy [Bullock] has worked with her, too, so the two of us were like, well, this is the perfect triangle because we all know each other so well and so to be able to work together on something that is fun and witchy, that’s fun and it has something very different to say [than Babygirl]. It’s a complete flip, honestly.”

Related

When it comes to the creative process, everybody is different.
