It could be &#8216;hidden&#8217; symptom of a life-changing illness that needs treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"author-section byline-plain\">By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/profile-3567\/jada-bas.html\" class=\"author\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JADA BAS<\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"byline-section\"> Published:  08:03 EDT, 22 May 2025   |  Updated:  08:29 EDT, 22 May 2025   <\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Waking up before your alarm rings could be a sign you&#8217;re suffering a debilitating hormonal condition that can lead to deadly heart problems, an expert has warned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">An overactive thyroid, also known as hyperthyroidism, affects roughly one in 100 people, and means the body produces too much of a collection of hormones that make us alert.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to hormonal\u00a0disorder specialist\u00a0Dr Gaurav Agarwal, early wakenings are often the first sign of the condition, as the excess hormones stimulates the nervous system in the early hours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">When untreated, the condition can cause a host of unpleasant symptoms such as thin hair, dry eyes, neck swelling, anxiety and unintended <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/weight_loss\/index.html\" id=\"mol-b4b06740-3701-11f0-906d-dd741f18d1d1\" rel=\"noopener\">weight loss<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">But most concerning are\u00a0life-changing complications like weakening of bones and irregular heart beats that could lead to fatal heart failure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Pregnant women should rush to get treated as it can increase the risk of premature birth and miscarriage.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The condition is &#8216;relatively common in the UK,&#8217; disease, which happens when an excess of\u00a0&#8216;fighter&#8217; proteins cause the thyroid to produce too many hormones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Graves&#8217; disease can also cause eye problems like bulging eyes, double vision, and eye irritation.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Genetic predisposition and environmental factors like smoking may increase the risk, but it is most common in women over 30.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Actress Daisy Ridley, famed for her role as Rey in the Star Wars franchise, recently opened up about her Graves&#8217;
