Under British rules, a resigning prime minister can choose to make appointments to the upper chamber, subject to vetting from a House of Lords scrutiny body. <\/p>\n<p>Ex-Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, former Home Secretary James Cleverly and former Deputy Foreign Secretary Andrew Mitchell, who all remain in the Commons as backbenchers, <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/67f905f16812c7adcf513f44\/Resignation_Honours_List_2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">received knighthoods<\/a>. Former Defense Secretary Grant Shapps also got that honor alongside Shadow Chancellor Mel Stride, while ex-Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villers was awarded a damehood.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour government is currently passing legislation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/uk-labour-party-class-warfare-tory-peers-parliament-hereditary-members-house-of-lords-hereditary-peerages-bill\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">remove the remaining 92 hereditary peers<\/a> who sit in the Lords by birthright.
