{"id":123903,"date":"2025-05-23T00:32:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T00:32:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/123903\/"},"modified":"2025-05-23T00:32:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T00:32:13","slug":"government-considers-widening-puberty-blockers-ban-include-hrt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/123903\/","title":{"rendered":"Government considers widening puberty blockers ban include HRT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                <img width=\"792\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/Trans-HRT-.jpg\" class=\"attachment-featured-image size-featured-image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"  \/>\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">Wes Streeting is considering expanding the ban on puberty blockers (Wiktor Szymanowicz\/Future Publishing via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"413086da-9e5c-45a9-bad8-3d968bf2fccd\">Health secretary Wes Streeting is considering extending the ban on puberty blockers for transgender youngsters to include private prescription of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the High Court has heard.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"fc1eb2ff-232d-4398-a95f-69752ee05da2\">Lawyers representing the government said an expert panel would report in July on the use of HRT, a revelation which came after the court rejected a call for a full judicial review from detranisioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2022\/12\/02\/bell-v-tavistock-puberty-blockers-trans-kids-mental-health-mermaids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keira Bell<\/a> and two others.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"91d801fe-0b3b-4ea8-bd9c-9de5a3b9d993\">The call for a full judicial review came after the UK government announced in December that puberty blockers for under-18s with gender dysphoria would be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2024\/12\/11\/wes-streeting-puberty-blockers-ban-indefinite-uk-trans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">banned indefinitely<\/a>\u00a0because of an apparent\u00a0\u201cunacceptable safety risk\u201d. Campaigners said not doing the same for cross-sex hormones was \u201cirrational\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"18b24b42-d84c-4cdb-8488-fba33a641101\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2024\/09\/10\/puberty-blockers-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Puberty blockers<\/a>, which delay unwanted elements of physical puberty, were temporarily banned by the Conservative government in May 2024 following the publication of a report which\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2024\/04\/10\/cass-review-extreme-caution-puberty-blockers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged \u201cextreme caution\u201d when prescribing the medication<\/a> to trans youngsters.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"6ba72d37-c109-4438-a337-0342292107ee\">Hilary Cass\u2019 400-page report made upwards of 32 recommendations to restructure the way in which young trans people received care.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"87d94ac9-94c7-49c2-a78d-7eba234d64ef\">After Labour\u2019s victory in the general election in July, Keir Starmer\u2019s government\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2024\/08\/27\/puberty-blockers-ban-extension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extended<\/a>\u00a0the ban.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4089\" height=\"2726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2147949203_21f61f.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-857040\"  \/>Puberty blockers were banned following the publication of the Cass Report. (Wiktor Szymanowicz\/Future Publishing via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"883469f9-f316-4036-80fe-ba935df1fd52\">Last month, Streeting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2025\/04\/09\/wes-streeting-puberty-blockers-ban-trans-sorry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0he was \u201cgenuinely sorry\u201d that the ban had caused \u201cfear and anxiety\u201d for transgender youngsters. Meanwhile, new figures showed waiting lists for gender-affirming healthcare in England <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2025\/05\/15\/trans-youth-nhs-waiting-lists-figures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased by 12 per cent<\/a> in the past year.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"1d34cff1-2b77-4d3a-833b-126af154c305\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2024\/03\/12\/what-is-hormone-replacement-therapy-and-how-safe-is-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HRT<\/a> is different to puberty blockers because it includes hormones such as oestrogen, progesterone or testosterone, whcih can be used to feminise or masculinise a person\u2019s body.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"9e05995f-4c4e-44c2-b630-7555a37c1490\">Feminising HRT is known to increase the size of breast tissue, make body hair lighter and soften facial features. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepinknews.com\/2024\/02\/23\/do-trans-men-on-testosterone-ovulate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taking testosterone<\/a>\u00a0can stop periods, deepen the voice and increase facial hair.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"dca80a30-ad46-482f-86cc-f48d7a79d57f\">A lawyer for the Department of Health, Iain Steele, told the High Court that Streeting was \u201ccurrently seeking clinical and expert advice from NHS England\u201d in regard to HRT, and the legal bid brought by Bell and others was \u201cpremature and academic\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"8b425bcd-be3e-4ce3-9f32-3d5fef44301d\">Steele went on to say: \u201cThe defendant [Streeting] has instead rationally chosen to keep that possibility under review, and, at his request, NHS England has established an expert working group to advise him, which is occurring in parallel with further work being undertaken by officials with a view to assisting his decision making.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"b5545e9c-731b-45fb-8a1d-3c14afec96ac\">Responding to the news, Bell <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cg711xevd89o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cI am relieved that the secretary of state is now actively considering a ban on cross-sex hormones outside the NHS. These powerful drugs should not be given to children and young people.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5332\" height=\"3555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2147949182.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-857041\"  \/>The government is looking at the possibility of a wider ban. (Wiktor Szymanowicz\/Future Publishing via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p data-beyondwords-marker=\"6dff8c09-0806-4ef0-978d-5a66b7dc1548\">\u201cAlthough the decision to actively review making a ban on these drugs is long overdue, it is welcome that he is now taking a lead. The safety of vulnerable children and young people should be a first priority.
