Such treatment can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0956053X24003295?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">include fermentation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10162384\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heat treatment<\/a>, or drying to remove harmful pathogens that can be found in unprocessed food waste.<\/p>\n<p>Lalander argues that regulatory barriers aren\u2019t the only challenge circular business models like the insect one are facing. Long-standing market expectations, shaped by cheap, linear production systems that overlook environmental costs, also pose a significant obstacle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a circular business model you pay for every step of the production. But if you look at the world market predominantly it\u2019s a linear economy which means you take product and then you have a waste and that\u2019s it,\u201d Lalander said.<\/p>\n<p>She points out that expecting insect feed to be as cheap as fishmeal and soy is unrealistic, noting that \u201cthe cost for using soy and fish meal comes in the environmental impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cr\u00e9pieux ended his conversation with POLITICO on a grim note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything sustainable always loses.
