{"id":12428,"date":"2025-04-12T02:07:16","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T02:07:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/12428\/"},"modified":"2025-04-12T02:07:16","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T02:07:16","slug":"erdogan-positions-turkey-as-point-of-stability-for-european-security-and-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/12428\/","title":{"rendered":"Erdo\u011fan positions Turkey as point of stability for European security and Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan has sought to position his country as a point of stability in an increasingly tumultuous world, saying Turkey is essential for European security.<\/p>\n<p>Erdo\u011fan also said Turkey is able to span geopolitical divisions over Ukraine, Syria and the recent wave of US tariffs that have sparked a global trade war.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/icon-cross-10x10-grey-6.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"10\" height=\"10\" alt=\"Close advertising\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The Turkish president, speaking at the annual Antalya Diplomacy Forum, is facing disruption at home from protests against the\u00a0imprisonment of his main political rival, Istanbul\u2019s mayor, Ekrem \u0130mamo\u011flu.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It has become clear once again that European security is unthinkable without Turkey. Turkey is ready to take responsibility for European security in the future as well,&#8221; he said at the opening of the three-day gathering.<\/p>\n<p>As trans-Atlantic relations cool under the Trump administration, NATO member Turkey, which has the alliance\u2019s second-largest military and a well-developed defence industry, is seeking a broader role.<\/p>\n<p>The White House has warned that the continent must look after its\u00a0own security, including Ukraine, and has so far shown no willingness to back a largely European force in Ukraine in the face of Russian hostility.<\/p>\n<p>Turkey has emerged as a key broker in the Black Sea region, preserving relations with both Ukraine and Russia. Erdo\u011fan and Trump have both spoken of their close personal relationship.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe that our relations with the United States will flourish in every field during President Trump&#8217;s second term, also with the contribution of our close friendship with him,&#8221; the Turkish president told an audience of world leaders and diplomats.<\/p>\n<p>Turning to Trump&#8217;s tariffs, Erdo\u011fan held out the chance of a\u00a0positive outcome for Turkey, which has been placed within the baseline 10% tariff.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are doing our best to prevent the heated commercial competition over customs tariffs from becoming destructive,&#8221; Erdo\u011fan said. &#8220;Turkey will be one of the winners of this process.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Turkey is also an influential actor in neighbouring Syria as rebel groups it supported during the civil war took power last December.<\/p>\n<p>However, the fall of long-time president Bashar Al-Assad has aggravated already tense relations between Turkey and Israel, with their conflicting interests pushing the relationship toward a\u00a0possible collision course.<\/p>\n<p>When Trump hosted\u00a0Israel&#8217;s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Washington last month, he advised him to be &#8220;reasonable&#8221; in his dealings with Ankara.<\/p>\n<p>Erdo\u011fan told the forum in Antalya: &#8220;We are in a state of understanding and close dialogue with influential actors in the region, especially Trump and Putin, in preserving the territorial integrity of Syria.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Syria&#8217;s new President, Ahmed al-Sharaa, sat just two places away from Erdo\u011fan.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"c-ad__placeholder__logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/logo-euronews-grey-6-180x22.svg.svg+xml\" width=\"180\" height=\"22\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>ADVERTISEMENT<\/p>\n<p>In an apparent warning, Erdo\u011fan said that &#8220;no-one should misunderstand our cool-headedness and our stance of resolving issues through dialogue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The president, a vocal critic of Israel&#8217;s military operations in Gaza, also focused on the killing of civilians in the enclave.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Even if it is at war, does a legitimate state act like this? Isn&#8217;t this called state terrorism?
