But documents summarizing this week\u2019s meeting of the bloc\u2019s ambassadors, seen by POLITICO, indicate serious doubts regarding Madrid\u2019s bid. <\/p>\n

While Belgium, Cyprus, Portugal, the Netherlands, Romania and Slovakia supported granting EU recognition to the Spain\u2019s additional official languages, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany and Sweden backed Italy\u2019s demands for \u201cfurther clarity on the costs and legal implications of the move.\u201d<\/p>\n

Madrid has vowed to foot the bill for the potentially millions of euros to add the languages into the EU\u2019s translation and interpretation framework. But S\u00e1nchez\u2019s promise has not swayed all his colleagues in the Council of the EU.<\/p>\n

Two EU diplomats, granted anonymity to discuss the confidential proceedings, confirmed the split among the two groups of capitals.<\/p>\n

EU countries opposing the move are concerned about the impact adding official languages could have on the bloc\u2019s bottom line<\/a>. The EU currently spends more than \u20ac1 billion per year to translate all EU laws, proposals and decisions \u2014 past, present and future \u2014 into the bloc\u2019s 24 official languages.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s unclear how much more cash would be required to incorporate Spain\u2019s additional languages into that group.
