Accession would allow EU institutions to be held accountable before the European Court of Human Rights, a move that is still being negotiated.

The convention, which came into effect in 1953, encompasses the right to life, a ban on slavery, protection against torture and degrading treatment, freedom of expression, prohibition of discrimination, and the right to family life.

All 46 countries that have signed the convention, including all 27 EU member states, must follow its provisions, with binding rulings issued by the European Court of Human Rights.

Anadolu Agency website contains only a portion of the news stories offered to subscribers in the AA News Broadcasting System (HAS), and in summarized form. Please contact us for subscription options.

COPENHAGEN Nine EU states called for “a new and open-minded conversation about the interpretation of the European Convention…

[5174
5340,365,55786,2000,299,5187,2440,2199
0":"post-125941","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-eu","8":"tag-anadolu-ajansi","9":"tag-denmark","10":"tag-echr","11":"tag-eu","12":"tag-europe","13":"tag-european","14":"tag-giorgia-meloni","15":"tag-italy
["GET
