{"id":126065,"date":"2025-05-23T19:36:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-23T19:36:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/126065\/"},"modified":"2025-05-23T19:36:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-23T19:36:13","slug":"historic-moment-as-work-on-new-greater-manchester-bypass-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/126065\/","title":{"rendered":"Historic moment as work on new Greater Manchester bypass begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The bypass has been on the cards for 60 years<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Construction-site-for-the-start-of-the-A57-link-roads-scheme.jpg\" alt=\"Construction site for the start of the A57 link roads scheme\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Construction site for the start of the A57 link roads scheme(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Work on a new Greater Manchester bypass &#8211; 60 years in the making &#8211; has started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The new A57 Link Roads scheme, more commonly known as the Mottram bypass, is set to transform travel in the north by reducing congestion and improving journeys between Manchester and Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The section of roads between <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/hyde-and-longdendale\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyde<\/a> and South Yorkshire have been problematic for motorists for years, this \u00a3228m scheme aims to change that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At an event in Mottram held today (May 23), National Highways boss Nick Harris welcomed Jonathan Reynolds, MP for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/stalybridge-and-dukinfield\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Stalybridge<\/a> &amp; Hyde, and Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, to mark the historic occasion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The two MPs used spades to \u2018break the ground\u2019 in a memorable moment.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_High-Peak-MP-Jon-Pearce-Left-with-Stalybridge-and-Hyde-MP-Jonathan-Reynolds-in-Mottram.jpg\" alt=\"High Peak MP Jon Pearce (Left) with Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds in Mottram\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>High Peak MP Jon Pearce (Left) with Stalybridge and Hyde MP Jonathan Reynolds in Mottram(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The A57 Link Roads project includes the creation of two new link roads. The first is Mottram Moor Link Road \u2013 a new dual carriageway from the M67 junction 4 roundabout to a new junction on the A57 at Mottram Moor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The other is the A57 Link Road \u2013 a new single carriageway link from the A57 at Mottram Moor to a new junction on the A57 in Woolley Bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">For The Stalybridge and Hyde MP, this is a moment he has been dreaming of for decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Reynolds said: \u201cThis goes way back to the 1960s when the A57 junctions were built and the plan was obviously for the big motorway between Manchester and Sheffield. It was pretty ambitious but it never happened, the problems we were left with have needed a solution.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_MP-Jonathan-Reynolds-on-site-for-the-start-of-Mottram-bypass-works.jpg\" alt=\"MP Jonathan Reynolds on site for the start of Mottram bypass works\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>MP Jonathan Reynolds on site for the start of Mottram bypass works(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis is, to me, not just about the road but <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/tameside\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tameside<\/a> and the north getting its fair share. Other areas had this sort of issue addressed a long time ago and we deserve the same.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIf you ask an audience if they\u2019ve ever been stuck in traffic between Sheffield and Manchester, everyone will put their hand up, everyone knows what it is. This deserves attention to fix it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis is the eastern gateway to Derbyshire, if you compare that to the western side with the connection to Warrington and St Helens, the difference in infrastructure is massive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis will make a big difference. Infrastructure enables opportunities, that\u2019s why this is so important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748028972_818_0_Construction-site-for-the-start-of-the-A57-link-roads-scheme.jpg\" alt=\"Construction site for the start of the A57 link roads scheme\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Construction site for the start of the A57 link roads scheme(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">This transformative work is seen as vital by National Highways because the A57 and A628 between Manchester and Sheffield suffers from heavy congestion, creating unreliable journeys. The transport body believes this has restricted economic growth, as the delivery of goods to businesses is often delayed and the route is not ideal for commuters, which limits employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">High Peak MP Jon Pearce said: \u201cIt\u2019s massively important for us in High Peak. Then 60 years later we\u2019re finally getting one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s massive, it will mean a huge step forward.
