The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, was designed to implement a 9\/11 Commission recommendation to improve the security of identification documents, particularly driver\u2019s licenses and state-issued ID cards. Under this legislation, in order for citizens to enter federal buildings<\/a> or travel within the country, they will need a valid REAL ID.<\/p>\n

Once it goes into effect, federal agencies will only be able to accept driver\u2019s licenses<\/a> and IDs that meet REAL ID security standards and include their compliance mark. They will also accept enhanced driver\u2019s licenses (EDLs) that were issued in Washington, Michigan, Minnesota, New York and Vermont, as they are considered acceptable alternatives.<\/p>\n

What is REAL ID?<\/p>\n

REAL ID is a new security standard for issuing identification such as driver\u2019s licenses and identification cards. To gain access to federal buildings, board a commercial flight or enter a nuclear power plant, you will need a valid REAL ID card. This is not a new ID, but will be \u201cupdated versions\u201d of other common cards, which will include details highlighting that it is legally valid.<\/p>\n

How to apply for a REAL ID?<\/p>\n

The process to get a REAL ID is simple. Just visit the website of the driver\u2019s license agency of the state in which you reside. Generally, documents showing full name, date of birth, social security number, proof of residency and legal status are requested. Other requirements may be established by each state. Once all requirements are met, the applicant will receive a valid REAL ID card.<\/p>\n

When does the law go into effect?<\/p>\n

The law goes into effect on May 7, 2025. After that date, a valid REAL ID will be required and passports cannot be used as an alternative option.<\/p>\n

Which states will issue the new cards?<\/p>\n

All states, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories.<\/p>\n

What will the IDs look like?<\/p>\n

The cards will have one of the five legal marks on the top. If the card does not have that mark, it will not be accepted as proof of identity<\/a>, and you will not be able to board a commercial flight. The markings are: a gold five-point star, a black five-point star, a white star surrounded by a gold circle, a white star surrounded by a black circle, and a gold bear with a white star on the back. Examples of these can be seen on the Department of Homeland Security site.<\/p>\n

Do minors need identification to travel?<\/p>\n

No. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will not require minors to have an ID. However, their companion must have a valid card.<\/p>\n

Do I still need a passport if I already have REAL ID?<\/p>\n

For domestic flights<\/a>, a passport will not be required. However, a passport is essential for international travel as REAL ID cards cannot be used to cross the border into Canada, Mexico or other international travel.<\/p>\n

Are EDLs valid?<\/p>\n

Yes. Enhanced driver\u2019s licenses (EDLs) can be used to travel domestically, and are acceptable alternatives for official federal purposes, such as accessing a federal facility. Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington are the only states that currently issue EDLs.<\/p>\n

What if I don\u2019t have REAL ID?<\/p>\n

Without a REAL ID or an EDL, you will not be able to enter flights in the United States.
