For the past two years, the family behind the social media page Life in a Log Home<\/a> has been sharing their scenic property in with a wild houseguest. They named her Gertie. She\u2019s a groundhog.<\/p>\n

And she\u2019s got it made.<\/p>\n

Gertie lives in a cozy den she made under the family\u2019s shed, from which she\u2019s always happy to emerge for snacks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have a deal with Gertie,\u201d homeowner Kelly told The Dodo. \u201cShe stays out of my vegetable garden, and I supply her with lettuce, carrots, grapes and apple slices. So far, she\u2019s kept her end of the deal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gertie, for the most part, has lived a solitary life, roaming around the property all by herself. But though she seemed to relish in singledom, Gertie still apparently isn\u2019t immune to the allure of romance.<\/p>\n

Sure enough, romance found her.<\/p>\n

The other day, while scanning her property, Kelly saw this \u2014 a male groundhog she\u2019d never seen before. He stood admiring Gertie from afar.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t long before the male groundhog moved in to introduce himself to Gertie, much to the delight of Kelly. She began filming moments from what might aptly be described as Gertie\u2019s first date.<\/p>\n

\u201cBertie, as he\u2019s been named, is her first suitor that we\u2019re aware of,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cWe were so excited to see them together and watch their interactions.\u201d<\/p>\n

The groundhog pair appeared to get along swimmingly, though Gertie did stop short of inviting Bertie back into her den.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe handled herself quite well,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cFrom what we\u2019ve seen, Gertie is definitely the boss.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bertie was clearly smitten.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s hung around for several days,\u201d Kelly said.<\/p>\n

Despite the sense that love is in the air, Gertie and Bertie\u2019s romance is likely to be short lived. Groundhogs are non-monogamous animals, and typically go their separate ways after mating.<\/p>\n

But Kelly is nevertheless elated by the prospect that their fling will be productive.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we wait and see if we will be welcoming little Gerties and Berties in the near future,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cWe are very wildlife friendly on our property. If Gertie welcomes a little family, we would be delighted for them to take up home under the garden shed!\u201d<\/p>\n
