{"id":128171,"date":"2025-05-24T14:05:18","date_gmt":"2025-05-24T14:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/128171\/"},"modified":"2025-05-24T14:05:18","modified_gmt":"2025-05-24T14:05:18","slug":"how-brexit-helped-britain-lose-the-chagos-islands-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/128171\/","title":{"rendered":"How Brexit helped Britain lose the Chagos Islands \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Finally, following years of negotiations, the Labour administration announced on Oct. 3 that \u2014 after more than half a century \u2014 it would give up sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, albeit with carve-outs to protect the U.K.\/U.S. airbase on Diego Garcia.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, Sands sees Britain&#8217;s EU departure as a major contributor. \u201cBrexit was a handmaiden to the 2017 vote at the U.N., and without the decision to have a vote and then the vote itself, there wouldn\u2019t have been an ICJ ruling,&#8221; he says. &#8220;So it is perfectly logical to say that Brexit contributed to this point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-896629776-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5642013\"  \/>\u201cThe General Assembly is a venue where non-Western countries have a built-in majority, and sorting out the unfinished business of decolonization is a perennial priority,\u201d Richard Gowan says. | Eduardo Munoz Alvarez\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>But Richard Gowan, U.N. director of the International Crisis Group, believes the U.K. would have lost the vote even if the EU had united behind it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe General Assembly is a venue where non-Western countries have a built-in majority, and sorting out the unfinished business of decolonization is a perennial priority,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is also true to say that the U.K. had not focused very much on the General Assembly in the years before 2017, as its focus at the U.N. was the Security Council,\u201d Gowan adds. \u201cAfter its set-backs in 2017, the U.K. mission in New York rebooted its approach to the General Assembly, and invested more in diplomacy there.
