{"id":128347,"date":"2025-05-24T15:37:07","date_gmt":"2025-05-24T15:37:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/128347\/"},"modified":"2025-05-24T15:37:07","modified_gmt":"2025-05-24T15:37:07","slug":"council-of-europe-hits-back-at-eu-leaders-calling-to-ease-migrant-expulsions-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/128347\/","title":{"rendered":"Council of Europe hits back at EU leaders calling to ease migrant expulsions \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They argued that in some cases, the court \u201cposed too many limitations on the states\u2019 ability to decide whom to expel from their territories\u201d and requested \u201ca <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-countries-criminals-human-rights-austria-estonia-poland\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-countries-criminals-human-rights-austria-estonia-poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new and open minded conversation<\/a> about the interpretation\u201d of the court.<\/p>\n<p> Berset hit back at the group, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/portal\/-\/alain-berset-on-the-joint-letter-challenging-the-european-court-of-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saying in a statement<\/a> that \u201cupholding the independence and impartiality of the Court is our bedrock.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that while political debate is \u201chealthy\u201d in any democracy, \u201cpoliticizing the Court is not,\u201d and warned that \u201cno judiciary should face political pressure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstitutions that protect fundamental rights cannot bend to political cycles.
