Murray was announced as Djokovic’s coaching partner at the back end of last year, with the pair working together up until earlier this month.

It was a partnership that started out on a strong foot, with Djokovic reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open before an injury forced him to withdraw. From that point on, poor form and injuries marred Djokovic’s start to 2025, meaning the two tennis icons ended their cooperation without a tournament win to their name.

Despite that, McEnroe was pleasantly surprised with how things worked out. Speaking ahead of the French Open, the American mused: “When it first happened, I laughed and thought ‘You have got to be kidding me’. It would be like Ivan Lendl coached me. They’re rivals. But it was fun, I was waiting for them to go at it on the sideline start screaming at each other because they’ve done that to coaches they’ve had in their careers.”

The announcement raised eyebrows at the time, given it came just months after Murray had hung up his racket following defeat in the doubles tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games. And on the back of the pair going their separate ways, McEnroe believes Murray will take some time away from the sport altogether to refocus his family life.

The seven-time singles Grand Slam champion explained: “Would Andy be a good coach? I believe he would be because he knows the game inside out. If he wants to do that, I think he’d be really good.”

On whether Murray will take some time away from the coaching game, he added: “I can’t tell you right now who I think he’d coached, he’s got young children, so he was travelling all the time. So I’m guessing he doesn’t want to do that.”

As for his former partner in crime, Djokovic, the Serb wrapped up his preparations for the upcoming French Open in perfect style by beating Hubert Hurkacz in the final of the Geneva Open in Switzerland.

It’s the first title of any kind Djokovic has won since taking gold at last summer’s Olympics and marks the 100th career victory for the 38-year-old, becoming just the third men’s player to reach triple figures. Next on his agenda is another shot at history: becoming the first tennis player of any gender to win 25 Grand Slam titles.

Tennis legend John McEnroe revealed he expected “screaming matches” between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic while the pair…

[4105
5233,4719,5066,13793,57012,4295,79,1068,16,15
0":"post-129218","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-tennis","8":"tag-andy-murray","9":"tag-atp-tour","10":"tag-french-open","11":"tag-john-mcenroe","12":"tag-murray-coaching","13":"tag-novak-djokovic","14":"tag-sports","15":"tag-tennis","16":"tag-uk","17":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
