Somerset Police)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A former police officer described as &#8220;manipulative and violent&#8221; has been jailed for three and a half years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">PC Mitchell Curtis, 34, was <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/crime\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced<\/a> at Gloucester Crown Court yesterday (Thursday, May 22).<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Curtis was found guilty of two counts of controlling and coercive behaviour, intentional suffocation and criminal damage, following a trial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The offences took place in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/south-gloucestershire\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">South Gloucestershire<\/a> and were committed whilst Curtis was off-duty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At the sentencing hearing, Judge Lawrie said Curtis&#8217; behaviour was \u201cdeceitful\u201d and his conduct and actions were that of \u201ca bully\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said Curtis had made the victim feel she wouldn\u2019t be taken seriously if she were to report him, and the judge went onto praise her courage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">At an accelerated misconduct hearing in February, the former police officer was found to have committed gross misconduct and would have been dismissed from the police force if he hadn&#8217;t already resigned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He was added to a national barred list, meaning he can never work in policing or other law enforcement agencies again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Assistant Chief Constable Joanne Hall, of <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bristolpost.co.uk\/all-about\/avon-and-somerset-constabulary\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Avon and Somerset Police<\/a>, said: \u201cMitchell Curtis is a manipulative and violent offender and he\u2019s now facing the consequences of his criminal behaviour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe sentencing hearing gives us a further opportunity to emphasise how courageous the victim has been throughout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;I hope the outcome of the judicial and misconduct proceedings show how seriously we take offences like this and that we\u2019ll be relentless in our pursuit of the perpetrators of abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The former PC was called &#8216;deceitful&#8217;
