For almost all Windows users, the latest update from Microsoft will be something of a bad news story, as some users suddenly get a faster, slicker way of using their PCs, while they miss out.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2025\/05\/22\/windows-11-24h2s-no-reboot-updates-feature-finally-kicks-off-with-kb5058497\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/www.windowslatest.com\/2025\/05\/22\/windows-11-24h2s-no-reboot-updates-feature-finally-kicks-off-with-kb5058497\/\" aria-label=\"Windows Latest\">Windows Latest<\/a>, this month\u2019s KB5058497 for Windows 11 24H2 \u201cis the first \u2018hotpatch\u2019 update, which means it doesn\u2019t require a reboot to finish installing. But unfortunately, it is only for Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise. There\u2019s no word on when the feature will roll out to Pro and Home consumers, but it might happen at some point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-3\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/23\/microsofts-emergency-windows-update-stop-blue-screen-of-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Microsoft\u2019s New Windows Update Stops Blue Screen Of Death\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/23\/microsofts-emergency-windows-update-stop-blue-screen-of-death\/\">ForbesMicrosoft\u2019s New Windows Update Stops Blue Screen Of DeathBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/blog\/Windows-ITPro-blog\/hotpatch-for-windows-client-now-available\/4399808\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/blog\/Windows-ITPro-blog\/hotpatch-for-windows-client-now-available\/4399808\" aria-label=\"Microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a> warned users this would be the case. \u201cWith hotpatch updates, you can quickly take measures to help protect your organization from cyberattacks, while minimizing user disruptions. Hotpatching represents a significant advancement in our journey to help you, and everyone who uses Windows, stay secure and productive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cnumerous enhancements\u201d Microsoft touted, include immediate protection, consistent security and minimized disruptions: \u201cUsers can continue their work without interruptions while hotpatch updates are installed. Hotpatch updates don\u2019t require the PC to restart for the remainder of the quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But this probably isn\u2019t for you. Microsoft also confirmed you will need:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cA Microsoft subscription that includes Windows 11 Enterprise E3, E5, or F3, Windows 11 Education A3 or A5, or a Windows 365 Enterprise subscription<\/li>\n<li>Devices running Windows 11 Enterprise, version 24H2 (Build 26100.2033 or later) and with the current baseline update installed<\/li>\n<li>An x64 CPU including AMD64 and Intel (Note: Arm\u00ae64 devices are still in public preview)<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Intune to manage deployment of hotpatch updates with a hotpatch-enabled Windows quality update policy<\/li>\n<li>Virtualization-based Security (VBS) enabled\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cRight now,\u201d says Windows Latest, \u201cwhen there\u2019s a new security update for Windows 11 24H2 or an older version, you need to reboot to apply it. That\u2019s the case for pretty much every update unless it\u2019s a security patch for Windows Defender. With hotpatching, you don\u2019t have to reboot the PC to install updates, but there are certain exceptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"color-body light-text\" role=\"button\">The hotpatch update cycle<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft<\/p>\n<p>The primary exception is that every third update does require a reboot, that enables a fuller update that can get to the parts of your PC a hot patch might not reach.<\/p>\n<p>KB5058497 \u201cfalls between May and June 2025, which is the \u2018no restart\u2019 period,\u201d in other words the hot patch two-months between reboot updates. \u201cIn our tests with Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise edition,\u201d Windows Latest says, \u201cKB5058497 installed on its own, and it did not ask for a reboot. I didn\u2019t even realise the update was installed until I went to Windows Update history. That\u2019s the magic of a reboot-free hotpatch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"embed-base color-body color-body-border link-embed embed-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/24\/do-not-open-these-videos-on-your-phone-or-pc\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Do Not Open These Videos On Your Phone Or PC\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"forbesEmbedly:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/24\/do-not-open-these-videos-on-your-phone-or-pc\/\">ForbesDo Not Open These Videos On Your Phone Or PCBy Zak Doffman<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For Windows 11 Home and Pro users watching on, the monthly, mandatory reboot continues. There is no information on what you might get the hot patch update. The update is still critical, it just comes with pain and downtime others now avoid.<\/p>\n<p>May is proving interesting for Microsoft, with an <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/21\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-windows-users\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/21\/microsoft-confirms-emergency-update-for-windows-users\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"emergency update\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency update<\/a> to fix a nightmarish Bitlocker Recovery issue and even reports of <a class=\"color-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/23\/microsofts-emergency-windows-update-stop-blue-screen-of-death\/\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/zakdoffman\/2025\/05\/23\/microsofts-emergency-windows-update-stop-blue-screen-of-death\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"blue screens of death\" rel=\"noopener\">blue screens of death<\/a>. Clearly, whether hotpatching or not, be sure to update your PC and reboot if needed.
