Sky News<\/a> host Trevor Phillips skewered deputy prime minister Angela Rayner<\/a> on his Sunday morning programme \u2013 telling her to \u201cspeak plainly\u201d. The pair were discussing prime minister Keir Starmer\u2019s<\/a> recent U-turn on Winter Fuel Allowance, which Nick Thomas-Symonds had denied was happening on the same show last week.<\/p>\n

Trevor began the discussion by saying: \u201cLet\u2019s talk about one of the other issues in welfare benefits. Forgive me if I\u2019m a bit aggrieved here \u2013 seven days ago, Nick Thomas-Symonds sat in that seat and I asked him, \u2018is the Winter Fuel Allowance<\/a> cut going to be reversed?\u2019 And he said no. That remains the policy. He obviously had no idea that the prime minister was going to scrap it on Wednesday. When did you find out?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rayner responded: \u201cWell let me just be really clear, the prime minister didn\u2019t say we\u2019re going to scrap it. What the prime minister said on Wednesday is when economic conditions allow \u2013 and we\u2019ve seen we\u2019re the fastest growing economy in the G7 and we\u2019ve already seen interest rates<\/a> cut since the Chancellor took over \u2013 where those conditions allow, Keir Starmer<\/a> says we want to do something around the eligibility for Winter Fuel Allowance, and that\u2019s what he said. It will be the future fiscal event that we\u2019ll be able to outline that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phillips pushed: \u201cYou\u2019re notoriously a plain speaker. Speak plainly to me. When will economic conditions allow, do you reckon?\u201d<\/p>\n

And Rayner replied: \u201cWell I think that we\u2019ve got the upcoming spending review and I\u2019m sure the Chancellor [Rachel Reeves<\/a>] will set it out at the first opportunity, Trevor, she will set out what we\u2019re able to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Phillips still wasn\u2019t satisfied as he went on: \u201cThe spending review will be the first opportunity so we might hear some of those changes in a couple of weeks\u2019 time?\u201d<\/p>\n

Laughing slightly, Rayner said: \u201cI hope so, but I don\u2019t know. I hope so!
