{"id":130347,"date":"2025-05-25T09:55:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T09:55:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/130347\/"},"modified":"2025-05-25T09:55:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T09:55:10","slug":"renationalisation-of-britains-train-services-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/130347\/","title":{"rendered":"Renationalisation of Britain\u2019s train services begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Government\u2019s renationalisation of rail services has started as trains operated by South Western Railway (SWR) were taken into public control.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander, who travelled on the first renationalised departure from London Waterloo, said it was \u201ca new dawn for our railways\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>SWR was previously owned by FirstGroup and MTR Corporation, but is now the responsibility of DfT (Department for Transport) Operator.<\/p>\n<p>All other services run by private companies will be renationalised as contracts reach the end of their minimum terms.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Heidi Alexander takes a photo next to a Great British Railways train\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/589062150dd01083c363d6b64d729a20.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander travelled on the first operational renationalised service early on Sunday (James Manning\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>The next operator\u2019s services to be brought under public control will be c2c \u2013 which runs between London and Essex \u2013 on July 20, with Greater Anglia following in October.<\/p>\n<p>The process is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s railway services were privatised in the mid-1990s.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking before boarding the 6.14am service to Shepperton, Surrey, Ms Alexander said: \u201cToday marks a new dawn for our railways.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"caas-img caas-lazy has-preview\" alt=\"Heidi Alexander sitting on a train\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/bcfb1052d5038ec3ac029bbe2772232c.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the occasion marks a \u2018new dawn for our railways\u2019 (James Manning\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoving away from 30 years of inefficiency, delayed services and failing passengers, and moving confidently into a new era \u2013 the era of Great British Railways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I was so adamant I had to be here at Waterloo this morning, alongside all these other excited passengers and rail aficionados, for what really is a watershed moment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost rail users don\u2019t spend much time thinking about who runs the trains, but they do want them to work, and that\u2019s why there\u2019s a genuine excitement here today at the generational opportunity we have to completely transform train travel in this country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the 6:14 service leaves Waterloo, I\u2019ll be sat on it with a sense of pride but also a determination to get this right and deliver a railway Britain can be proud of again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a post on X after the train departed, Ms Alexander said: \u201cUp early to be on the first train out of Waterloo under public ownership. Are the people that are going to be running it day to day\u2026 going to be genuinely empowered to make the right decisions to run the railway?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got plenty of very, very able managers, but over the last five years \u2013 particularly since Covid when franchises effectively went bust and national rail contracts were put in place \u2013 there has been a huge amount of centralised control, and it\u2019s quite stifling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnbosco Nwogbo, of public ownership campaign group We Own It, said: \u201cToday is a great day for passengers because our railway is finally beginning its journey back to putting us, our communities and our planet before the profits of private shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the job is not yet done.
