{"id":130372,"date":"2025-05-25T10:09:16","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T10:09:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/130372\/"},"modified":"2025-05-25T10:09:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T10:09:16","slug":"champions-cup-final-halted-after-just-minutes-as-horror-collision-sees-england-star-given-oxygen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/130372\/","title":{"rendered":"Champions Cup final halted after just minutes as horror collision sees England star given oxygen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barely five minutes had been played when the incident occurred.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_JS370326622.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>George Furbank of Northampton Saints leaves the field on a medical stretcher after picking up a head injury(Image: 2025 Gaspafotos\/MB Media)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">England international George Furbank took a sickening blow to the head before being removed from the field by a medical cart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The incident occurred in the Champions Cup final between Northampton Saints and Bordeaux Begles at the Principality Stadium in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/all-about\/cardiff\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Cardiff<\/a> on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Furbank had attempted to catch a cross-field kick from Maxime Lucu when he tumbled to the ground as the ball bounced away.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">A surging Romain Buros was haring after the ball when Furbank attempted to get up, causing Buros&#8217; knee to connect with Furbank in an horrific collision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Just four minutes had been played in the Welsh capital when Furbank went down, causing the match to be stopped for a number of minutes while medical professionals tended to the Saints back. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/walesrugby.substack.com\/subscribe?coupon=7b6a76da\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Referee Nika Amashukeli decided it was simply a rugby incident and there was no penalty or card against Buros.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Once it was deemed safe to do so, Furbank was removed from the field on a medical cart wearing a brace and being administered what looked like oxygen, prompting sympathetic applause from both sets of fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It was a surprise that Furbank was involved at all with Saints today, after suffering an injury against Castres in the quarter-final.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The 28-year-old had no game-time between that game and the final today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;It\u2019s always a gamble&#8221;, said Phil Dowson ahead of the match.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">&#8220;Whenever you bring someone back from an injury, there\u2019s always a risk. He hasn\u2019t been a mile away from coming back.
