{"id":131171,"date":"2025-05-25T17:19:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T17:19:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/131171\/"},"modified":"2025-05-25T17:19:08","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T17:19:08","slug":"spain-hosts-european-arab-nations-to-pressure-israel-to-halt-gaza-assault-israel-palestine-conflict-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/131171\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain hosts European, Arab nations to pressure Israel to halt Gaza assault | Israel-Palestine conflict News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The international community should look to impose sanctions on Israel to stop its war in Gaza, Spain\u2019s foreign minister has said, ahead of a Madrid meeting of European and Arab nations, urging a halt to Israel\u2019s punishing offensive in which Palestinian deaths and the spread of starvation are increasing each day.<\/p>\n<p>The high-level talks on Sunday are the fifth official meeting of what is known as \u201cThe Madrid Group\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Countries in the European Union that Israel had long counted on as close allies have been adding their voices to growing global pressure after it expanded military operations in the besieged and bombarded Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n<p>A nearly three-month aid blockade has worsened shortages of food, water, fuel and medicine in the Palestinian enclave, which has been devastated and ravaged due to Israel\u2019s relentless war that followed the Hamas-led October 7 attack in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Barely any aid has crossed into Gaza since Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said a week ago that Israel would allow limited aid in to assuage concerns from allies.<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations has said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/5\/23\/israel-maintains-minimal-aid-deliveries-to-gaza-amid-hunger-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amount of aid<\/a> allowed in so far is a \u201cdrop in the ocean\u201d, while some aid groups have described Netanyahu\u2019s announcement as a\u00a0 \u201csmokescreen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Aid organisations say the trickle of supplies Israel that allowed to enter in recent days falls far short of needs, which is between 500-600 trucks a day. Israel has allowed some 100 trucks carrying aid into Gaza since Wednesday, officials say.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Madrid, Spain is hosting 20 countries as well as international organisations on Sunday with the aim of \u201cstopping this war, which no longer has any goal\u201d, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this terrible moment, in this humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, we aim to \u2026 stop this war \u2026 [and to] break the blockade of humanitarian assistance that must go in unimpeded,\u201d Albares told Al Jazeera ahead of the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018We must consider sanctions\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Madrid meeting will serve as preparation for a high-level UN conference on the two-state solution, which France and Saudi Arabia will host in New York on June 17.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to create momentum\u201d ahead of the UN conference, Albares said, so that \u201ceveryone\u201d can recognise Palestine as an independent state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat conference in New York must be a big moment to push towards recognition of the state of Palestine,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>A previous such gathering in Madrid last year brought together countries including Egypt, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye as well as European nations such as Norway and the Republic of Ireland that have recognised a Palestinian state.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s meeting, which also includes representatives from the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, will promote a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.<\/p>\n<p>After the EU decided this week to review its cooperation deal with Israel, Albares said, \u201cWe must consider sanctions, we must do everything, consider everything to stop this war.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister Florian Hahn on Sunday also warned about the impact of Gaza\u2019s deteriorating, \u201cunbearable\u201d humanitarian crisis, calling for an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic solution.<\/p>\n<p>Hahn stressed that ending the war in Gaza and creating a path for diplomatic efforts toward a political solution is currently one of German foreign policy\u2019s main priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Al Jazeera\u2019s Hashem Ahelbarra, reporting from Madrid, said Sunday\u2019s meeting is going to be \u201ccrucial\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Members are going to be \u201cseeking the potential of further political talks that could be conducive to the Israelis coming along with the Palestinians, discussing the need to end the war and achieve a Palestinian state\u201d, Ahelbarra said.<\/p>\n<p>Israel\u2019s deadly assault has killed almost 54,000 people, according to Gaza\u2019s Health Ministry, mostly women and children.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The international community should look to impose sanctions on Israel to stop its war in Gaza, Spain\u2019s foreign&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":131172,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5174],"tags":[2000,299,5187,2194,837,7424,839,12,1814,104],"class_list":{"0":"post-131171","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-eu","8":"tag-eu","9":"tag-europe","10":"tag-european","11":"tag-gaza","12":"tag-israel","13":"tag-israel-palestine-conflict","14":"tag-middle-east","15":"tag-news","16":"tag-palestine","17":"tag-spain"},"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@uk\/114569620201922215","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/131171","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=131171"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/131171\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/131172"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=131171"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=131171"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=131171"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
