{"id":131274,"date":"2025-05-25T18:15:15","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T18:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/131274\/"},"modified":"2025-05-25T18:15:15","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T18:15:15","slug":"migration-matters-festival-returns-for-its-10th-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/131274\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Migration Matters&#8217; festival returns for its 10th year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrationmattersfestival.co.uk\/programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Migration Matters<\/a> Festival in Sheffield will allow migrants and refugees to celebrate their culture and heritage creatively.<\/p>\n<p>The festival, set up by the charity \u2018Arts on the Run\u2019, will take place from run from the 21st to 28th of June.<\/p>\n<p>One participant in the festival expressed that it \u2018is a really important part of Sheffield culture because Sheffield was the first city of sanctuary.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The talent on display will vary between dance, film, music, art, poetry, and creative writing workshops, which are due to run throughout the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Amongst those featuring their creativity is multi-award winning illustrator and performer Madeleina Kay, from London. Her art exhibition, \u2018Kaleidentity\u2019, explores the identity of ten migrants she met on a tour of Europe in 2019, which was funded by the \u2018Democracy Needs Imagination\u2019 grant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cA lot of the narratives in the media kind of demonise migrants and I really wanted to just celebrate their identities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kay\u2019s oil paintings and lino cut prints depict the individual identities of the migrants she met, and she says that the project was \u2018an act of love\u2019 to them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"66144\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/65aa91d2c6334b26b3210daaaaa3e938-2-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66144\"\/>Madeleina Kay and participant Lora Krasteva<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"735\" data-id=\"66145\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/ba691fe51ec8cda66838476147d56098-1024x735.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66145\"  \/>Madeleina with her painting of Lora<\/p>\n<p>Kay describes herself as being in a \u2018facilitating role\u2019 to the migrants who she has based her exhibition on, describing it as a \u2018co-creation\u2019 between her and them.
