Chris Wilder has admitted he was ‘suffering’ after Sheffield United’s Championship play-off final defeat.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Blades were beaten 2-1 by Sunderland<\/a> at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, the winning goal seeing them concede in the fifth minute of stoppage-time.<\/p>\n

Tom Watson’s late goal secured the Black Cats’ return to the Premier League<\/a> after an eight-year absence.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, United’s woeful play-off record<\/a> has been extended to ten appearances without gaining promotion.<\/p>\n

Despite the crushing defeat, Wilder appeared on Weekend Sports Breakfast on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Natalie Sawyer and Tony Cascarino, the Blades boss explained: “Listen, I was always coming on. For Cas being a big part of Mind and yourself.<\/p>\n

“So, you have to be consistent with your attitude. It was a one-off game. So we understood the eventualities if we didn’t get it right.<\/p>\n

“But I was suffering a little bit last night. I’m a little bit sorry for myself and the players and the staff and most importantly the supporters but the job is a leadership job.<\/p>\n

“So I’ve got to lead and I’ve got to front it up and take ownership of everything and get back on the bike.”<\/p>\n

Wilder was hailed for speaking so soon after missing out on a place in the top-flight.<\/p>\n

Following his appearance, Sawyer said: “That is the Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder, there, who as I say didn\u2019t have to do it. It\u2019s not an easy thing to come on.”<\/p>\n

He was also praised by a host of fans, who messaged in to the show, with one stating: “Fair play to Chris, an honest interview and big of him to come on the radio a day after a final defeat.”<\/p>\n

Wilder is now looking to the future as the Blades prepare for a second consecutive Championship season.<\/p>\n

The 57-year-old added: “We’ve got some good young players coming through as well.<\/p>\n

“So the plus side of it, we’ve got some terrific young players through the academy that will go again. And it wasn’t to be, but it still doesn’t take that pain and that sting from yesterday.”<\/p>\n

The loss to Sunderland was the fifth time United have been beaten in a play-off final.<\/p>\n

However, this was their first post-season campaign under Wilder, who is in his second spell in charge at Bramall Lane.<\/p>\n

He previously won promotion from both League One and the Championship with the club.<\/p>\n

Having returned to the Blades in December 2023, his current deal has another three years remaining.<\/p>\n
