{"id":131778,"date":"2025-05-25T22:47:19","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T22:47:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/131778\/"},"modified":"2025-05-25T22:47:19","modified_gmt":"2025-05-25T22:47:19","slug":"this-greater-manchester-bypass-has-been-60-years-in-the-making-now-its-finally-happening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/131778\/","title":{"rendered":"This Greater Manchester bypass has been 60 years in the making, now it&#8217;s finally happening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spades are officially in the ground for the massive road infrastructure project<\/p>\n<p>18:15, 25 May 2025Updated 18:18, 25 May 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_JS52022673.jpg\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Traffic congestion  on the A57, Wooley Lane, towards Mottram Moor<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">On the edge of Greater Manchester people have been crying out for a bypass to solve their traffic problems. 60 years on, work has officially started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The Mottram bypass has been a thing of myth and legend in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/tameside\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tameside<\/a> for decades, but now it is a reality. The A57 link road scheme, estimated to be worth around \u00a3228m, is designed to tackle congestion between Manchester and Sheffield.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The massive infrastructure scheme was finally signed off last year &#8211; having first been mooted in 1965.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The A57 Link Roads project includes the creation of two new link roads. One is Mottram Moor Link Road \u2013 a new dual carriageway from the M67 junction 4 roundabout to a new junction on the A57 at Mottram Moor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The other is the A57 Link Road \u2013 a new single carriageway link from the A57 at Mottram Moor to a new junction on the A57 in Woolley Bridge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748213231_723_1_unnamed.jpg\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The major plan is designed to relieve congestion on the A57(Image: National Highways)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">On Friday (May 23), a special event to mark the historic day works started saw spades used to \u2018break the ground\u2019. Jonathan Reynolds, MP for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/stalybridge-and-dukinfield\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Stalybridge<\/a> &amp; <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/hyde-and-longdendale\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Hyde<\/a>, and Jon Pearce, MP for High Peak, were armed with shovels for a photo opportunity to mark the special occasion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Afterwards, they both hailed the project as transformative for the area and their constituents. The A57 and A628 between Manchester and Sheffield has been plagued with heavy congestion for years, creating unreliable journeys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Both politicians and National Highways believe this has restricted economic growth, as the delivery of goods to businesses is often delayed and the route is not ideal for commuters &#8211; limiting employment opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">It is expected to be three long years until 2028 &#8211; when the link roads are scheduled to be up and running. The business secretary has been campaigning for the link roads since the early 2000s, back when he was the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/hyde-and-longdendale\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Longdendale<\/a> councillor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Both he and Jon Pearce vowed to deliver this scheme in the build up to last year\u2019s general election. Given Mr Reynolds\u2019 ministerial position and his enthusiasm for the project, spades going in the ground seemed inevitable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Reynolds told the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Manchester Evening NewsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Manchester Evening News<\/a>: \u201cThis goes way back to the 1960s when the A57 junctions were built and the plan was obviously for the big motorway between Manchester and Sheffield. It was pretty ambitious but it never happened, the problems we were left with have needed a solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThis is, to me, not just about the road but Tameside and the north getting its fair share. Other areas had this sort of issue addressed a long time ago and we deserve the same.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIf you ask an audience if they\u2019ve ever been stuck in traffic between Sheffield and Manchester, everyone will put their hand up, everyone knows what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why has it taken 60 years?<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748213234_965_0_Construction-site-for-the-start-of-the-A57-link-roads-scheme.jpg\" alt=\"Construction site for the start of the A57 link roads scheme\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Construction site for the start of the A57 link roads scheme(Image: LDRS)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The project has seen many bumps in the road over the last six decades. How the road layout would work has evolved over the years with different ideas having been explored, but funding was eventually confirmed last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The pace of work picked up in the early 2000s, but the design process caused concerns in the Peak District area &#8211; home to a huge national park.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">There was worry the new link road, which has been scaled back in size, could encroach on the beauty spot buzzing with ramblers, cyclists and nature lovers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Reynolds explained: \u201cThe reason it has taken so long is because it is the edge of the North West. About 20-years-ago when I was involved, a lot of the decisions were delegated to the regional level. It\u2019s much easier to get a regional coalition in the North West around fixing the M6 junction than it would be here.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThere were some issues when we had the original, bigger plan, which touched on the band of the Peak District park and that was very sensitive at the time. The minister in charge of business and trade says his <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/labour-party\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Labour<\/a> government will be taking action on that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In recent years, just when everyone thought the project was going to go through, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/high-court-date-set-legal-27698361\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"a legal challenge from a countryside charityLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">a legal challenge from a countryside charity<\/a> put a halt on proceedings. The Countryside Charity CPRE, also known as the Campaign to Protect Rural England, applied for a judicial review in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The group said the former Transport Secretary Mark Harper failed to take into account the impact of increased carbon emissions and failed to consider alternatives to building a new road on the green belt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">That challenge was rejected by the Court of Appeal in 2024, meaning work to enable construction officially got the green light.<\/p>\n<p>What are the key benefits for the wider area?<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/0_Bypass.jpg\" alt=\"The A57 Link Road proposals\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The A57 Link Road proposals(Image: Copyright Unknown)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The bypass going past Mottram has always been a talking point in the area since the M67 was built. Currently the short motorway runs from the eastern side of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/m60\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">M60<\/a> at <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/denton-and-audenshaw\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Denton<\/a> all the way to a roundabout next to the Hattersley <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/all-about\/tesco\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Tesco<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">As the politicians, media and contractors gathered to celebrate the milestone on May 23, just off that very roundabout, the problem they were working to solve was evident. A huge snake of traffic going from the start of the A57 over the roundabout and backing onto the M67 was building in the background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Reynolds explained that motorway traffic is being \u2018dumped\u2019 on village roads, which isn\u2019t good enough for locals\u2019 quality of life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He added: \u201cPeople come along this motorway from the M60 and see the sign for Sheffield thinking \u2018oh great\u2019, but then it just ends. Many people living in areas like Glossop, Chapel-en-le-Frith and Whaley Bridge work in the city-region. It has been nightmarish for those people to get to work and back, which is why their MP has hailed this project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Jon Pearce told the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"M.E.NLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">M.E.N<\/a>: \u201cMy major priority is that residents can get in and out of High Peak as easily as possible. And that certainly hasn\u2019t been happening for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe have a huge number of people who work in Manchester and in Sheffield. Anything we can do to improve connectivity for those people &#8211; their commutes to work, the football, or the hospital &#8211; then we absolutely should be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cIt\u2019s hugely important we delivered this. There was a lot of nonsense in the general election from my opponent that if Labour got in, this would be cancelled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cWe were absolutely determined that this was going to go ahead, as you can see we\u2019re delivering it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What the government says<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Transport Secretary, Heidi Alexander, said: \u201cThis is a long-awaited moment for communities across the North. The A57 Link Roads will not only cut congestion and shorten journey times between Manchester and Sheffield, but will also open up new opportunities for growth, jobs and investment across the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cJonathan Reynolds has been a fantastic advocate for this vital project. We\u2019re proud to be backing it as part of our plan to boost connectivity through our Plan for Change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">National Highways Chief Executive Nick Harris added: \u201cWe are delighted with the Government\u2019s commitment to deliver this major investment in our road network<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cThe A57 Link Roads scheme will transform travel in the North by improving journey time and reliability between Manchester and Sheffield.
