U.K. markets are closed for a public holiday.<\/p>\n<p>European autos stocks rebounded from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/23\/european-stock-markets-live-updates-ftse-dax-cac-40-stoxx-600-friday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 3% loss<\/a> in the previous session to trade 1.7% higher on Monday morning. The industry is particularly sensitive to the threat of U.S. tariffs, given that vehicles and machinery are <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/statistics-explained\/index.php?title=USA-EU_-_international_trade_in_goods_statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the EU&#8217;s biggest export<\/a> to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>German carmakers saw broad gains, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/BMW-DE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BMW<\/a> up 1.4%, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/DAII-FF\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mercedes-Benz<\/a> gaining 1.5%, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/VOW3-DE\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Volkswagen<\/a> jumping 1.5%.<\/p>\n<p>Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/23\/trump-recommends-50percent-tariff-on-european-union-starting-june-1.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initially called<\/a> on Friday for a 50% tariff on EU goods, saying in a post on his Truth Social platform that the duties would begin from June 1. He accused the bloc of being &#8220;very difficult to deal with,&#8221; and said trade negotiations with the EU were &#8220;going nowhere.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/25\/trump-50percent-tariffs-eu-july-9.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">then said<\/a> he had agreed to delay the 50% tariffs to July 9 following a call from EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.<\/p>\n<p>Von der Leyen said in a post on X over the weekend that the EU was &#8220;ready to advance talks swiftly and decisively.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/26\/asia-markets-live-updates-for-may-26-2025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Overnight in Asia<\/a>, shares were trading in mixed territory, with Japanese and South Korean stocks moving higher as Chinese and Hong Kong-listed shares saw losses.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. markets are closed on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.
