These enhancements are part of Portugal\u2019s broader strategy to align with forthcoming EU border policies, including the Entry\/Exit System and the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). During the transition period, travellers may experience longer processing times and increased scrutiny upon entry. The Portuguese authorities have launched new systems at air and sea border checkpoints to align with broader European Union initiatives aimed at enhancing border security and operational efficiency. These systems include:<\/p>\n

PASSE+<\/p>\n

This new Portuguese border control system is set to replace the existing framework and has been designed to be fully compatible with upcoming EU-wide systems, including the Entry\/Exit System (EES). It supports automated monitoring and data integration across Schengen borders.<\/p>\n

VIS4<\/p>\n

Part of the EU\u2019s Visa Information System (VIS), VIS4 manages short-stay visa data for travellers entering the Schengen Area. The system enhances the accuracy and security of visa validation by integrating biometric data collated using compatible systems, such as fingerprints and facial recognition.<\/p>\n

Borders Portal<\/p>\n

A centralized platform for border officers, the Borders Portal consolidates critical data and operational guidelines\u2014such as bilateral agreements and traveller history\u2014to support informed decision-making at the point of entry.<\/p>\n
