{"id":133696,"date":"2025-05-26T16:35:18","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T16:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/133696\/"},"modified":"2025-05-26T16:35:18","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T16:35:18","slug":"our-beautiful-seaside-town-was-once-dubbed-the-magaluf-of-britain-strict-mankini-ban-saved-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/133696\/","title":{"rendered":"Our beautiful seaside town was once dubbed the Magaluf of Britain &#8211; strict &#8216;mankini ban&#8217; saved us"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A SEASIDE town that was once known as &#8216;Britain&#8217;s Magaluf&#8217; is unrecognisable after cleaning up its image &#8211; and banning mankinis.  <\/p>\n<p>Business owners and locals say they hardly recognise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/34624936\/our-peaceful-quiet-village-is-ruined-by-huge-145m-long-waterslide-it-looks-ridiculous-and-we-hear-screams-all-day-long\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newquay <\/a>in Cornwall, after a major effort was made to shed its &#8216;wild west&#8217; reputation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Street scene in Newquay, Cornwall, showing shops and businesses.\" height=\"696\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Brad Wakefield - The Sun\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/sun-reporter-jenny-francis-investigates-119096545.jpg\" data-caption=\"The mankini ban was introduced in 2009\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/sun-reporter-jenny-francis-investigates-119096545.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>11<\/p>\n<p>The mankini ban was introduced in 2009Credit: Brad Wakefield &#8211; The Sun<a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"View of Newquay Beach and town, showing a cleaned-up seaside area with people relaxing and enjoying the day.\" height=\"960\" width=\"644\" data-credit=\"Brad Wakefield - The Sun\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/sun-reporter-jenny-francis-investigates-119096535.jpg\" data-caption=\"The seaside town was once dubbed the 'Britain's Magaluf'\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/sun-reporter-jenny-francis-investigates-119096535.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>11<\/p>\n<p>The seaside town was once dubbed the &#8216;Britain&#8217;s Magaluf&#8217;Credit: Brad Wakefield &#8211; The Sun<\/p>\n<p>The coastal spot had a reputation for rowdiness and was known for playing host to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/travel\/34799637\/nottingam-popular-tourist-tax\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stag dos<\/a>, lads holidays and drunken teenage gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>The council finally had enough and in 2009 introduced a &#8220;mankini ban.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new law, which was part of the award-winning Newquay Safe campaign, banned mankinis and other &#8220;inappropriate clothing&#8221; such as fancy dress in public.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign was introduced after two teenagers tragically died on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/travel\/35037326\/hundreds-hotels-world-best-uk-cheap-stays\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nights out<\/a> in the town.<\/p>\n<p>It was a huge success, Devon and Cornwall Police reported crime in 2012 fell by one-fifth compared to 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Reports of anti-social behaviour also dropped from 685 to 286 in those years.<\/p>\n<p>Long suffering locals say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/34934372\/brit-beach-plant-poisoning-island-forager\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Newquay <\/a>today is a world apart from its past.<\/p>\n<p>Independent coffee shops line the high street where the infamous Bertie&#8217;s nightclub, which closed its doors last year.<\/p>\n<p>Families walk along the quiet coast and take surfing lessons, while older residents play bowls overlooking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/money\/35074390\/cheapest-coastal-town-revealed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">beach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Vintage and skate and surf clothing stores are dotted amongst quaint pasty shops.<\/p>\n<p>The only markers of a different time are the arcades in the town centre.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/travel\/35020419\/best-england-beach-camber-sands-tourist-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arcade worker<\/a> Maddie Grover, 25, says that while there are still stag dos, they&#8217;re &#8220;not as bad as they were at the time.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>She grew up in the town and said the area particularly quietened down after Bertie&#8217;s closed down.<\/p>\n<p>She said now some clubs don&#8217;t allow stag dos inside if the attendees are dressed up.<\/p>\n<p>Maddie added: &#8220;The high street is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/35013169\/rowdy-partygoer-tackled-arrested-pub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">little bit rowdy <\/a>in the central area. You&#8217;re not dodging vomit on the high street.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I skateboard from the top of the hill to the shop and there&#8217;s no longer passed-out people, people who have vomited everywhere and broken glass. It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/35050591\/travellers-poo-town-drastic-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cleaned up<\/a> quite a lot since then.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I just see hungry, happy, people wandering around in the mornings looking for a good breakfast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are families coming down, and the families that come down have that mentality of: &#8216;I&#8217;d love to live here because of how it is.&#8217; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Compared to before when you would walk down the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/money\/35120925\/the-original-factory-shop-chester-le-street-durham-closing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high street<\/a> and see six dudes in mankinis and none of them have seen a gym before and you&#8217;re like: &#8216;Great.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You still get stag and hen dos but they&#8217;ve been reined in. There are certain rules and regulations, like the mankini ban. The way I see it, living in Newquay, if you think you&#8217;re in the circus, it&#8217;s a headache; if you think it is a circus and you&#8217;re just watching it, it&#8217;s quite funny because you&#8217;re not taking it seriously.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Fights are fights, it&#8217;s always going to happen. It&#8217;s the nature of mixing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/travel\/35097441\/lisbon-rollercoaster-trams-art-gallery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alcohol <\/a>with idiots. You might not get it to such a grand scale now but it&#8217;s still going to happen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want you to have a good time but also we want to have a good time, so don&#8217;t knock the bins over at 3am and wake everybody up.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s just goofy stuff and not stuff the police can be running round and dealing with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/tech\/35069603\/beach-resort-planet-sea-future-astro-tourist-hotspot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tourists <\/a>were attracted by the &#8220;little town mentality and community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Andy added: &#8220;Everyone&#8217;s welcome until they do something stupid and then they get shunned.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a small town; crime is pretty low.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, he said there was a problem with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/news\/35067558\/dad-slams-karen-council-casino-party\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second homes<\/a> &#8211; an epidemic across Cornwall.<\/p>\n<p>Locals complain they are being priced out of their picturesque towns by people buying up their houses and raising costs.<\/p>\n<p>Andy added: &#8220;There is a problem with second homes and the council renting out homes to undesirables. They have New Year&#8217;s and Christmas parties still but I think it used to be crazier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t go out anymore so I just assume nobody does.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mark Dixon has been in Newquay for 40 years. The arcade worker said it is nowhere near as busy as it used to be, as Newquay would be &#8220;booming&#8221; from the Easter holidays until the October half term.<\/p>\n<p>However, he pointed to a trend rising throughout <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/travel\/34936866\/popular-food-brand-summer-uk-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cornwall <\/a>&#8211; the second home.<\/p>\n<p>Mark, 58, said: &#8220;We haven&#8217;t got any hotels anymore; most of them have been converted. There used to be a lot of guest houses but now there are second homes no one can afford.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I was younger there were quite a lot of clubs and pubs.
