{"id":133788,"date":"2025-05-26T17:27:31","date_gmt":"2025-05-26T17:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/133788\/"},"modified":"2025-05-26T17:27:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T17:27:31","slug":"spotlight-on-gaelic-education-in-edinburgh-event-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/133788\/","title":{"rendered":"Spotlight on Gaelic education in Edinburgh &#8211; event this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>        The successes and challenges of Gaelic-medium education (GME) \u00a0in Edinburgh will come under the spotlight at a discussion organised by the Gaelic community group Ionad G\u00e0idhlig Dh\u00f9n \u00c8ideann. <\/p>\n<p>GME has grown impressively since it began in 1988 and today more than 700 children are enrolled at the city\u2019s dedicated Gaelic primary school, Bun-sgoil Taobh na P\u00e0irce, and James Gillespie\u2019s High School.<\/p>\n<p>The event will bring together current and former GME teachers in Edinburgh to reflect on their experiences and offer their thoughts about the future development of Gaelic education in the city. <\/p>\n<p>Panelists will include Donna MacIver, Depute Head Teacher at James Gillespie\u2019s High School, Karen Reid, Depute Head Teacher at\u00a0 Bun-sgoil Taobh na P\u00e0irce, Mona Wilson, the first GME teacher in 1988 and director of Primary Education with Gaelic at Moray House, University of Edinburgh. Chairing the session will be Professor Matthew MacIver, former Chief Executive of the General Teaching Council for Scotland and former chair of B\u00f2rd na G\u00e0idhlig and the Gaelic Media Service.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be held at the National Library of Scotland on Saturday 31 May at 2pm.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson McLeod, chair of <a href=\"https:\/\/ionaddhuneideann.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ionad G\u00e0idhlig Dh\u00f9n \u00c8ideann<\/a>, said: \u201cGaelic education in Edinburgh has been a remarkable success story but there have been many challenges along the way. This expert discussion will help put these developments in perspective and give insight on the future of Gaelic in the capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This panel discussion is one of a series of four events under the banner \u2018Gaelic in Edinburgh: past, present and future\u2019, part of the Edinburgh 900 celebration funded by the City of Edinburgh Council.<\/p>\n<p>Ionad G\u00e0idhlig Dh\u00f9n \u00c8ideann is a charitable organisation that is working to establish a Gaelic cultural hub to support the Gaelic community in Edinburgh and provide a \u2018home\u2019 for the language in the capital.
