King Charles and Queen Camilla arrived in Ottawa on Monday for the monarch’s first visit to Canada since becoming head of state.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Mark Carney greeted the royal couple as they disembarked from the Royal Canadian Air Force plane that had flown them from RAF Brize Norton.<\/p>\n
The visit holds significant symbolic importance, showing support for the nation that recognises Charles as sovereign but is coveted by US President Donald Trump as a potential “51st state”.<\/p>\n
Trump has repeatedly expressed a desire to annex Canada, a proposition fiercely rebuffed by Carney.<\/p>\n
The 76-year-old king, who is undergoing cancer treatment, will open parliament on Tuesday following an invitation from Carney.<\/p>\n
It will be just the third time a sovereign has delivered a “speech from the throne” in the Canadian Senate.<\/p>\n
“The king, as head of state, will reinforce the power and the strength of that message,” said Canada’s envoy to the UK, Ralph Goodale, referring to Carney’s stance that “Canada is not for sale now, is not for sale ever”.<\/p>\n
