{"id":135545,"date":"2025-05-27T09:18:11","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T09:18:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/135545\/"},"modified":"2025-05-27T09:18:11","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T09:18:11","slug":"geraint-thomas-says-time-is-right-for-tour-de-france-final-bow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/135545\/","title":{"rendered":"Geraint Thomas Says Time is Right for Tour de France Final Bow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>    &#8220;], &#8220;filter&#8221;: { &#8220;nextExceptions&#8221;: &#8220;img, blockquote, div&#8221;, &#8220;nextContainsExceptions&#8221;: &#8220;img, blockquote, a.btn, a.o-button&#8221;} }&#8221;&gt;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/geraint-thomas\/\" data-afl-p=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geraint Thomas<\/a> is accepting the inevitable in his final <a href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/tour-de-france\/\" data-afl-p=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tour de France<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/team-ineos\/\" data-afl-p=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ineos Grenadiers<\/a> superstar, a winner of the yellow jersey in 2018, is hoping for a chance to take one last stage win, but accept that he may play more of a support role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve got the experience to lead the team, which I kind of do anyway,\u201d the 2018 Tour de France winner told Velo, \u201cbut I still want to be successful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want to go to the Tour and just ride around. But you can find success in all sorts of areas: helping the leader in the final, going for a stage win yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also read<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/riders-revolt-in-tour-of-turkey-geraint-thomas-left-breathless-by-pogacar-were-doing-420-watts-and-hes-talking-watches\/\" data-afl-p=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thomas left breathless by Poga\u010dar\u2019s 400-watt chat<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thomas, 39 this year, is one of the most durable riders in the World Tour and a perennial anchor for the British super team.<\/p>\n<p>The Welshman has spent 19 seasons in the peloton, taking prestige wins in the Tour de France, Paris-Nice, the Tours of Switzerland and Romandie and the Crit\u00e9rium du Dauphin\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas agrees with the view that his 2018 Tour success was the defining moment of British cycling\u2019s cultural revolution, which saw Team Sky become the dominant force in stage racing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, for sure. I didn\u2019t think I\u2019d continue as long as I have, but everything since then has been a bonus really. For me, winning the Tour was definitely the pinnacle, and obviously Brad (Wiggins) did it, and (Chris Froome) \u2018Froomey,\u2019 but I was an academy product of British Cycling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leaving a legacy: \u2018The timing was right\u2019<br \/>\n<img data-lazy-load=\"\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-947146\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2212192591-720x480.jpg\" alt=\"Geraint Thomas\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/>Thomas will race one last Tour and retire at the men\u2019s Tour of Britain.  (Photo: Dario Belingheri\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>He has seen huge changes in the sport, in terms of team financing and sponsorship, as well as quantum leaps in equipment technology and rider performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBike riders have always been skinny,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s more the whole package. Everyone is just stronger. Everyone is training better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLosing those few kilos makes a big difference these days,\u201d he said. \u201cThey always have done, but even more so, now the whole peloton is getting better. I still enjoy racing my bike and being with the boys. I still enjoy training, especially when it starts to feel better and you\u2019re traveling uphill quicker and the watts are higher. It\u2019s a great feeling. To be honest, I had thought my 2022, 2023 contract would be my last, but then I had two good years, the family were happy, so it was like: \u2018Why stop?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMacs is growing fast,\u201d Thomas said, of his son. \u201cHe will be six in October, and I\u2019ve started to miss home more and more. It just felt like the timing was right. It was quite an easy decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Thomas is the last one to moan about his life on the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t feel I\u2019ve missed out as a dad. It\u2019s just life: there are a lot of people who work 9-5 who only ever see their kids for a couple of hours a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe life we\u2019ve been able to live, being a bike rider and all the privileges that we get from that, I think we have been lucky, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helping the next generation: \u2018I\u2019ve got a lot to offer\u2019<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" data-lazy-load=\"\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-947147\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/GettyImages-2206973926-720x480.jpg\" alt=\"Geraint Thomas\" width=\"720\" height=\"480\"\/>Thomas hints he might stay on with Ineos Grenadiers in some sort of role.  (Photo: Szymon Gruchalski\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The experience, insight, and knowledge that has taken him to multiple successes, including Olympic gold medals, may soon be put to use in a management role within the Grenadiers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been mentioned, but it\u2019s something I haven\u2019t spoken properly about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d rather just concentrate on getting to the Tour as best I can, having a good Tour, then thinking about it. It\u2019s something I\u2019d love to do though. I love cycling, I love the team, so would love to stay involved in some capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas, as part of the team\u2019s management, may also prove attractive to his friend and rival, Remco Evenepoel, long connected with a move to the British team and recently linked to them again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think I\u2019ve got a lot to offer on performance and going after bike races,\u201d Thomas said, who refused to be drawn into speculating what role he might play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019d be a lot to learn as well, which is also exciting. It all depends on the role I\u2019d end up doing, but that\u2019s the type of challenge I\u2019d be looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whatever happens, he intends to stay in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been used to targeting races and going after something and really dedicating myself. If I just go home to Cardiff, take Macs to school, and do nothing the rest of the day, I\u2019ll go insane after a week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas and his family are planning to remain a resident in Monaco until the autumn of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will see how that goes and what I\u2019m doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after he decided to call time, the news that the 2027 grand d\u00e9part of the Tour de France was to visit Wales, became more than just a rumor. Was he not tempted to carry on?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found out a few months ago. Obviously it would be amazing, but two years is a long time in cycling and I\u2019m more than happy to stop this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t want to do it just to do it. It\u2019s not just being there. It\u2019s still bike racing and a lot of things can happen, with him and his team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always try to prepare the best I can and we go in there, all together, make the best plan you can and try and execute that. Whatever happens, happens. When you have someone as strong as Pogacar around it certainly makes it tougher.
