Keir Starmer<\/a>‘s bid to deepen trading ties with the European Union has been lambasted after the EU Commission itself named a set of 10 major Single Market barriers. Last week, the Prime Minister hailed a new agreement with the European Union<\/a> which he vowed would give the UK “unprecedented access to the EU market \u2013 the best of any country outside the EU or EFTA”.<\/p>\n

Sir Keir<\/a> also said the agreement will “boost British exporters because, once again after a long absence, we\u2019ll be able to sell great British burgers, shellfish and other products into the EU”.<\/p>\n

Only a couple of days later the EU Commission, the bloc’s executive body, published a document<\/a> addressing questions and answers on the single market, identifying a series of issues with the common market, as reported by pro-Brexit<\/a> site Facts4EU<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A section from “Questions and Answers on the Single Market Strategy<\/a>“, shared by the commission on May 21, reads:<\/p>\n

“The Commission has identified a set of \u2018Terrible Ten’ Single Market barriers on the basis of comprehensive consultations of stakeholders”.<\/p>\n

The issues they identified include:<\/p>\n

  1. Complicated business establishment and operations<\/li>\n
  2. Overly complex EU rules<\/li>\n
  3. Lack of Single Market ownership by Member States<\/li>\n
  4. [Lack of] Recognition of professional qualifications<\/li>\n
  5. Long delays in standard-setting that weigh on innovation and competitiveness<\/li>\n
  6. Fragmented rules on packaging, labelling and waste<\/li>\n
  7. Outdated harmonised product rules and lack of product compliance<\/li>\n
  8. Restrictive and diverging national services regulation<\/li>\n
  9. Burdensome procedures for temporary posting of workers<\/li>\n
  10. Territorial supply constraints<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    As the UK government looks to boost Britain’s ailing post-Brexit<\/a> economy, Sir Keir’s agreement with European leaders promised to “slash red tape” and “open up access to the EU market”.<\/p>\n

    But Facts4EU claimed the commission’s surprisingly scathing assessment of the single market represents a “total repudiation of any excuse for Sir Keir Starmer<\/a>\u2019s strategy to \u2018align more closely\u2019 with the EU to improve trade and prosperity for the United Kingdom”.<\/p>\n

    The outlet also said the “bombshell….effectively ridiculed the whole purpose of his Summit in the first place”.<\/p>\n

    However, the government has made clear its deal with the EU “meets the red lines set out in the government\u2019s manifesto \u2013 no return to the single market, no return to the customs union, and no return to freedom of movement”.<\/p>\n

    Sir Keir’s deal with European leaders, as he seeks to reset relations with Brussels, includes a string of agreements on fishing, food, and defence.<\/p>\n

    The deal means the UK will get reduced checks on food being exported to the bloc, and for the first time since the UK left the European Union<\/a>, Britain will be able to sell raw burgers and sausages back into the EU as part of a new sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreement, as per BBC News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    Other elements of the wide-ranging deal include the establishment of a formal UK-EU defence and security pact which Downing Street says “paves the way” for arms firms based in the UK to access a \u00a3150bn EU fund that provides loans for defence projects.<\/p>\n

    London and Brussels have also agreed to cooperate further on a “youth experience scheme“<\/strong> akin to the Erasmus scheme Britain was previously part of, though negotiations are ongoing.<\/p>\n

    It’s also been agreed that British holidaymakers will be able to pass through e-gates at more European airports, though a timeline hasn’t yet been provided for when it will be introduced.<\/p>\n
