{"id":13612,"date":"2025-04-12T11:27:13","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T11:27:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/13612\/"},"modified":"2025-04-12T11:27:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T11:27:13","slug":"china-seeks-to-make-common-cause-with-european-union-over-trumps-tariffs-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/13612\/","title":{"rendered":"China seeks to make common cause with European Union over Trump\u2019s tariffs \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">When China announced on Friday it was hiking its tariff on American imports to 125 per cent, it affected a tone that was both firm and insouciant. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Every time over the past few days that Beijing has retaliated to one of US president Donald Trump\u2019s tariff increases, Washington has responded with a further hike, bringing the US import duty on Chinese goods to a staggering 145 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">This time, China said its latest increase would be the last and it would simply ignore any further turns of the screw from Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">\u201cGiven that American goods are no longer marketable in China under the current tariff rates, if the US further raises tariffs on Chinese exports, China will disregard such measures,\u201d the finance ministry said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Tariffs are not the only retaliatory weapon in China\u2019s arsenal and Beijing has also restricted access for US producers to some rare minerals used in the making of high-tech products. China also announced it would show fewer Hollywood films in cinemas and told Chinese citizens to think twice before visiting the US or going there to study.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/show-cover.jpg\"\/>Trump\u2019s tariffs: &#8216;The rest of the world is now going to de-risk from the United States&#8217;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall\">Xi Jinping on Friday met Spanish prime minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez and the European Union confirmed that commission president Ursula von der Leyen and European Council president Antonio Costa will travel to Beijing in July for an EU-China summit.
