by three years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A CHEAP and easy-to-find supplement could slow ageing by three years, scientists say<\/p>\n<p>Experts already urge Brits to take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/29199519\/test-vitamin-d-supplements-boost-immunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vitamin D<\/a> from October to March, when sunlight is too weak for the body to produce enough naturally.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Hand holding several yellow flaxseed oil capsules poured from a bottle.\" height=\"607\" width=\"960\" data-credit=\"Getty\" data-img=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/supplements-vitamin-d-flaxseed-oil-962850960.jpg\" data-caption=\"The common supplement could counter three-years worth of ageing\"   loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/supplements-vitamin-d-flaxseed-oil-962850960.jpg\" role=\"img\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>1<\/p>\n<p>The common supplement could counter three-years worth of ageingCredit: Getty<\/p>\n<p>Vitamin D regulates levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/25552135\/key-nutrients-found-in-multivitamins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calcium<\/a> and phosphate, essential <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/diet-nutrition-weight-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nutrients<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/33737859\/how-to-protect-bones-osteoporosis-fractures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy bones<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/teeth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">teeth<\/a>, and muscles.<\/p>\n<p>Now, scientists suggest taking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/vitamins-and-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supplement<\/a> daily for four years could slow ageing by helping preserve protective DNA caps, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/health\/32198337\/reduce-biological-age-weight-lifting-exercise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telomeres<\/a>, which shrink as we get older.<\/p>\n<p>Shorter telomeres have been linked to ageing, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/27278094\" rel=\"nofollow\">inflammation<\/a>, which is associated with autoimmune diseases as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/cancer\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t rush out to buy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/topic\/vitamins-and-supplements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supplements<\/a> just yet. <\/p>\n<p>The findings need to be confirmed with additional research, the US scientists from Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDietary supplements will never be a substitute for healthy diet and healthy lifestyle, and we\u2019ve made it very clear time and again that the focus should be on the diet and lifestyle rather than on supplementation,\u201d Dr JoAnn Manson, a co-author of the study, said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, targeted supplementation for people who have higher levels of inflammation or a higher risk of chronic diseases clearly related to inflammation, those high-risk groups may benefit from targeted vitamin D supplementation,&#8221; she told <a aria-label=\"The Washington Post (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2025\/05\/22\/vitamin-d-aging-telomere-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, analysed data from 900 US adults over 50, who took part in the ongoing VITAL trial.<\/p>\n<p>Some were given 2,000 IUs of vitamin D3, others 1g of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/fabulous\/2872558\/benefits-of-omega-3-fish-oils-diet-how-much\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">omega-3<\/a> fish oil a day, or a placebo, for four years.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists then measured the length of telomeres in the blood at the start, and again after two and four years.<\/p>\n<p>Top 5 Vitamins for Beautiful Hair<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies observed a link between vitamin D and longer telomeres, but couldn\u2019t prove the vitamin caused the effect.<\/p>\n<p>This latest trial was randomised, double-blind and placebo-controlled &#8211; the gold standard of clinical research &#8211; making the findings more robust.<\/p>\n<p>Those taking vitamin D3 saw significantly less telomere shrinkage than those who didn\u2019t, equivalent to a three-year slowdown in ageing.<\/p>\n<p>How can I boost my vitamin D levels?<\/p>\n<p>Government-funded research has found that more than one in 10 adults in the UK are lacking in the sunshine vitamin.<\/p>\n<p>You can derive a certain amount of vitamin D from your diet, through foods like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oily fish \u2013 such as salmon, sardines, herring and mackerel<\/li>\n<li>Red meat<\/li>\n<li>Liver (avoid liver if you are pregnant)<\/li>\n<li>Egg yolks<\/li>\n<li>Fortified foods \u2013 such as some fat spreads and breakfast cereals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It&#8217;s recommended that children aged one and above and adults take a supplement with 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day during autumn and winter.<\/p>\n<p>You can get a box of Ultra Vitamin D 2000 IU Extra Strength (96 tablets) from Boots for just 9p a tablet. <\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll find similar prices at Holland &amp;
