provide a new core clinical information system for Birmingham Women’s and Children’s, replacing current IT systems, including patient administration systems and several legacy specialty systems.

In a press release, the trust said: “The programme to deliver this change is called Taurus and is an exciting transformation, which will enhance processes, improve data management and help us deliver even better care to our women, children and families.”

The trust went live with the system on 15 May 2025, after signing a contract with Epic in January 2024.

Steve Cumley, chief operating officer at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, told Digital Health News: “We’re pleased to be launching our new EPR, which will enhance our digital capacity and allow us to continue improving the care we provide to our patients.

“It will also allow our patients to interact with it directly in order to change appointments and stay abreast of their, or their child’s, care needs.

“Like anything new, our colleagues will be getting used to the system, so we ask that people are patient with us.

“However we’re confident that patients should expect to receive the same high-quality care they’re used to while we get to grips with the new ways of working.”

As part of the EPR rollout, patients and their families can now use the MyChart BWC app to access parts of their health care record such as appointment times and test results.

The app also allow patients to communicate with their healthcare team and attend video appointments.

A spokesperson for Epic said: “Congratulations to Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust on their Epic go-live.

“With this milestone, they’ve brought together acute and specialty services on a single, fully integrated EPR.

“Alongside us, clinicians and staff from other NHS trusts using Epic are on-site at BWC, working side-by-side with their peers—highlighting the deep, hands-on collaboration that defines the Epic community in the UK.

“We look forward to continuing to support the trust as they advance care for patients and families in Birmingham and across England.”

Meanwhile in January 2025, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust and Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust both signed a contract with Epic for an EPR as part of a shared vision to implement a single EPR across Devon.

Torbay and South Devon NHS Trust also announced that it had selected Epic as its preferred EPR supplier in February 2024.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital (Credit: ALLYOU Grzegorz Wasowicz / Shutterstock.com) Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS
