{"id":136552,"date":"2025-05-27T18:12:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T18:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/136552\/"},"modified":"2025-05-27T18:12:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T18:12:10","slug":"bergen-sailings-certainly-not-being-considered-transport-scotland-clarifies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/136552\/","title":{"rendered":"Bergen sailings \u2018certainly not\u2019 being considered, Transport Scotland clarifies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>SAILINGS to the Norwegian city of Bergen are \u201cnot being considered\u201d as part of the next contract for the Northern Isles ferries at present, a senior transport figure has said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Green councillor Alex Armitage had asked whether a service to Bergen could be introduced when the new Northern Isles ferry contract comes into effect in 2028.<\/p>\n<p>But Transport Scotland\u2019s senior transport planner David Torrance said that was not something they were considering as part of those discussions.<\/p>\n<p>Armitage said there would be demand in Shetland for service to Norway, and he encouraged them to bring that to the table.<\/p>\n<p>Associate transport planning director David Laing said they would pass the feedback on.<\/p>\n<p>After media reports\u00a0that a Shetland-Bergen link was in the pipeline, Transport Scotland clarified that was not the case.<\/p>\n<p>It told Shetland News on Tuesday night\u00a0its representatives \u201ccertainly did not say\u201d that a Shetland to Bergen sailing was being considered as part of the new ferry contract.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Scotland officials were attending Tuesday\u2019s external transport forum, where they provided an update on plans for two new freighter-flex ferries.<\/p>\n<p>A contract to build the vessels for the Northern Isles route is hoped to go out for procurement shortly, they said.<\/p>\n<p>Transport Scotland hopes to award the contract for the two vessels, which could potentially hold up to 200 passengers as well as freight, in the early part of 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The first vessel would then be delivered \u2013 if on time \u2013 in early 2029, with the second ferry following shortly afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>The ferries would be able to operate either as full-freight vessels, with room for just 12 passengers, or as passenger ships \u2013 offering capacity for 200 people.<\/p>\n<p>Torrance said an outline business case had now been presented to Scottish ministers.<\/p>\n<p>Questions were again asked about whether the emphasis will be on cabins or pods within the new vessels, with Armitage advocating once more for Japanese-style horizontal sleeping pods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"row-text sign-in-message\">Already a member?
