(PHOTO \/ AFP)<\/p>\n<p>BRUSSELS &#8211; Ministers from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadailyhk.com\/hk\/article\/611871#EU-agrees-on-fresh-sanctions-against-Moscow--2025-05-16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>European Union (EU) countries<\/strong><\/a> on Tuesday approved the creation of a 150-billion-euro (about $170.22 billion) arms fund, the bloc&#8217;s first large-scale defence investment program at EU level, the Council of the EU said in a press release.<\/p>\n<p>The fund will be channelled through the new Security Action for Europe instrument, which offers competitively priced, long-maturity loans to member states that choose to invest in defence industrial production via joint procurement of priority capabilities, the Council said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO READ: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadailyhk.com\/hk\/article\/612076#Britain-agrees-trade-and-defense-reset-with-EU-2025-05-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Britain agrees trade and defense reset with EU<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The European Commission, the EU&#8217;s executive arm, proposed the fund in March as an essential part of its ReArm Europe Plan\/Readiness 2030 package, which aims to leverage over 800 billion euros in defence spending to bolster European security and defence cooperation.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Flags of the European Union flutter outside The Europa Building in Brussels on March 17, 2025.
