Yet controversy over second jobs is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/boris-johnson-ban-mps-second-consultancy-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">never far from the headlines<\/a>, and debate rages over where to draw the line.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/9057859-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6671337\"  \/>For the Tories, simply keeping the lights on has meant that helping former colleagues took a back seat. | Will Oliver\/EPA-EFE<\/p>\n<p>Brake\u2019s Unlock Democracy campaigns against MPs having second jobs involving large directorships or consultancies with outside firms.<\/p>\n<p>But even he backs MPs earning \u201cabout half as much\u201d as their political salary while in parliament, if limited to professions that require work to maintain an accreditation. Brake said this would mean MPs could more easily return to that role full-time \u201ceither because they choose to or because their electorate forces them to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brake sees upsides to the churn, however.
