Jake Banta of Erie County and six fellow Republican lawmakers want to make ivermectin, the anti-parasitic drug that became a popular alternative treatment against COVID-19 among vaccine skeptics, available over the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Banta&#8217;s H.B. 1494 was referred to the House Health Committee May 21. It mirrors a similar bill proposed in the upper chamber by state Sen. Doug Mastriano. Both bills were introduced in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"related-link\"><strong style=\"margin-right:3px\">Fact check: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/factcheck\/2023\/08\/17\/ivermectin-still-not-fda-approved-as-covid-19-remedy-fact-check\/70595989007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No, FDA did not &#8216;quietly approve&#8217; ivermectin as COVID-19 treatment<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goerie.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/state\/2022\/10\/17\/pa-house-candidate-jake-banta-amplifies-election-covid-conspiracies-online\/65361499007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.goerie.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/state\/2022\/10\/17\/pa-house-candidate-jake-banta-amplifies-election-covid-conspiracies-online\/65361499007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Banta<\/a> called the drug &#8220;cheap&#8221; and &#8220;safe&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.palegis.us\/house\/co-sponsorship\/memo?memoID=46505&amp;document=HB1494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in his cosponsorship memo<\/a> and claimed it cured his mother of COVID-19 within four days of taking it in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>States, not FDA, make ivermectin push<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Centers of Disease Control and the World Health Organization, however, do not recommend using ivermectin for treatment of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Ivermectin is a very safe drug that has been used by millions of people worldwide,&#8221; Banta wrote. &#8220;In 2015 it won a Nobel Prize for its role in treating parasitic diseases.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The drug is used to treat headlice, scabies, river blindness and has both topical and oral applications.<\/p>\n<p>The Food &amp; Drug Administration has not approved ivermectin for use without a prescription. However, Arkansas, Idaho, and Tennessee have already passed laws making it available over the counter.
