{"id":139058,"date":"2025-05-28T15:48:18","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T15:48:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/139058\/"},"modified":"2025-05-28T15:48:18","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T15:48:18","slug":"new-nottinghamshire-county-council-cabinet-member-for-transport-and-environment-bert-bingham-criticised-by-newark-and-sherwood-green-party-for-public-climate-change-denial-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/139058\/","title":{"rendered":"New Nottinghamshire County Council cabinet member for transport and environment Bert Bingham criticised by Newark and Sherwood Green Party for public climate change denial comments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The councillor now responsible for overseeing Nottinghamshire\u2019s environmental priorities has drawn criticism for his controversial views on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Reform UK took control of Nottinghamshire County Council in the local elections on May 1, holding an overall majority after winning 39 of the council\u2019s 66 divisions.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, newly-elected councillor for Worksop West, Bert Bingham, was appointed as cabinet member for transport and the environment, despite public comments made on the campaign trail referring to climate change as a \u201choax\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 3000 2000\" alt=\"Bert Bingham, Nottinghamshire County Council cabinet member for environment.\" data-root=\"\/_media\/img\/\" data-path=\"XRO8T2NGIYK0WCEHIFR7.jpg\" data-ar=\"1.50\"\/>Bert Bingham, Nottinghamshire County Council cabinet member for environment.<\/p>\n<p>Several comments about climate change were posted to his personal social media pages in the run-up to the election, including one where he said he would do everything in his power to &#8220;end the net zero crime&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The appointment has drawn strong criticism from the Newark and Sherwood Green Party, who raised \u201cserious concerns\u201d about Mr Bingham\u2019s comments.<\/p>\n<p>Environmental campaigner and leader of the Green Group at Newark and Sherwood District Council, Emma Oldham, said: \u201cI strongly recommend councillor Bingham visit the communities already living with the consequences of climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe should speak to families who\u2019ve been flooded out of their homes, farmers who are struggling to grow food in increasingly erratic weather, and the businesses that have been forced to close due to repeated flooding. (Vote Bert Bingham for Worksop West, Facebook)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the county\u2019s lead flood authority, he must answer this: What will he do when unseasonal rainfall once again brings devastation to our doorsteps?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis comments show a shocking disregard for the lived experiences of Nottinghamshire residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI urge him to sit down with his officers and review the scale of flood recovery grants, damage assessments, and the countless hours lost to emergency response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cDenying climate change isn\u2019t just irresponsible, it\u2019s dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about belief. This is about science, duty and safeguarding the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClimate change is not a matter of opinion, it\u2019s a matter of action. And by refusing to act, Bert is failing in the most fundamental duty of his office: to protect the people he serves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bingham has experience working inside the EU&#8217;s climate change programme and on recycling projects. As a cabinet member, he is entitled to a salary of around \u00a343,000.<\/p>\n<p>It is as yet unclear how the Mr Bingham\u2019s views will impact upon council decisions regarding climate, and if environmental decision taken by the previous administration will be honoured.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rthmb\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg xmlns=\" http:=\"\" viewbox=\"0 0 2316 3088\" alt=\"Matthew Spoors and Emma Oldham. Photo: Newark and Sherwood Green Party.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly critical is Matthew Spoors, who is hoping to secure a place on the county council in the upcoming Newark West by-election on July 3, as the Green Party candidate.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cWhile Bert dreams of England 2,000 years ago, the climate crisis is happening right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn just the first five months of 2025, the UK has already experienced the most intense wildfires on record \u2014 burning more land than in the entire year of 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe path forward is clear: create new jobs, upskill our workforce, deliver cleaner air and secure affordable, renewable energy.
