He has broken that promise as he broke his promise on tax\u201d, the former prime minister posted on X. <\/p>\n<p>Sir Keir \u2013 who has made a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/travel\/news-and-advice\/british-passport-egates-airport-uk-eu-talks-b2753521.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Brexit reset <\/a>a centrepiece of his administration \u2013 said last week\u2019s UK-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/eu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a> summit marks a \u201cnew era\u201d of relations with the bloc, adding that it is about \u201cmoving on from stale old debates\u201d and \u201clooking forward, not backwards\u201d.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/brexit-reset-starmer-eu-deal-uk-politics-b2753667.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/a85136f57a2a39294a140fa087467cdeY29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNjk2Nzk5NTcx-2.50403428.jpg\"  loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Boris Johnson and Marina Wheeler, who have four children together, separated in 2018 (Dominic Lipinski\/PA)\" class=\"sc-1mc30lb-0 QHifS\"\/>Boris Johnson and Marina Wheeler, who have four children together, separated in 2018 (Dominic Lipinski\/PA) (PA Archive)<\/p>\n<p>The deal &#8211; which was the first serious attempt to fix the harms caused by Brexit after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/boris-johnson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boris Johnson<\/a>\u2019s flawed deal in late 2019 &#8211; was seen as a major coup for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/labour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prime minister, <\/a>despite his failure to get concrete details agreed on defence and youth mobility.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Wheeler\u2019s publisher, Weidenfeld &amp; Nicolson, said her book would compare her ex-husband\u2019s Brexit deal to a divorce settlement. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike a court order in a divorce, the Brexit deal contains our bare legal obligations\u201d, they said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet as dangerous forces gather and global technologies stoke animosity, we have a wider duty. If Britain and Europe can\u2019t work together, what chance do democracy and the rule of law have?\u201d, the publisher said. <\/p>\n<p>Ms Wheeler added: \u201cNearly 10 years after Britain voted to leave the EU, the unstable state of the world is clear to us all. Less obvious is the extraordinary opportunity this presents to put right what went wrong before and build a Europe we can together defend.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The human rights barrister was married to Mr Johnson for 25 years, separating in 2018 after having four children. <\/p>\n<p>The book\u2019s synopsis reads: \u201cLabour aims for a \u2018reset\u2019.
