{"id":13921,"date":"2025-04-12T14:06:27","date_gmt":"2025-04-12T14:06:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/13921\/"},"modified":"2025-04-12T14:06:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-12T14:06:27","slug":"franco-smith-leinster-better-than-ireland-after-bullying-glasgow-planet-rugby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/13921\/","title":{"rendered":"Franco Smith: Leinster better than Ireland after &#8216;bullying&#8217; Glasgow : Planet Rugby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>Glasgow Warriors boss Franco Smith had \u201cno excuses\u201d for his team\u2019s performance in their 52-0 Investec Champions Cup defeat to Leinster.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>All Blacks star Jordie Barrett produced a man-of-the-match performance as Leinster ran in eight tries and nilled the Scottish outfit in an emphatic quarter-final victory.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the match, Smith praised Leinster and the club\u2019s set-up, a team he believes to be \u201cfar ahead of everyone else\u201d in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/category\/champions-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Champions Cup<\/a>\u00a0and could be better than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/ireland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Glasgow Warriors simply outplayed<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were brilliant, I\u2019m not even going to try make excuses from our side\u2026 It\u2019s the first time that we have been completely bullied in every part of the game,\u201d the coach told Premier Sports.<\/p>\n<p>He echoed those sentiments in the post-match press conference, stating that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/team\/glasgow-warriors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow<\/a> isn\u2019t the first team to be outplayed by Leinster, who are effectively an international outfit.<\/p>\n<p>The Leinster starting XV had only one player, Tommy O\u2019Brien, who is yet to play international rugby, and the same is true on the bench with rookie lock Diarmuid Mangan being the only player yet to play a Test match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously we are disappointed but if you look at it, we were outplayed by an international team,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/tag\/franco-smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smith<\/a> said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey haven\u2019t played much since the Six Nations so they are fresh, and they have a point to prove in Europe, but we still came with our best intent, and I can\u2019t fault the effort of the boys \u2013 We were just absolutely outplayed in every facet of the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not the first coach to sit here and say that, other coaches have sat here and said how good they are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, we\u2019ve been winning quite a bit and pushing the players\u2019 boundaries and limits every week but today they found out what is still needed to be competitive in international rugby or the top end of club rugby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"px-3 xs:px-4 mt-3 mb-2 font-semibold leading-snug text-base text-title\"><strong>\ud83d\udc49 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/unstoppable-leinster-give-glasgow-warriors-the-harlequins-treatment-as-irish-province-hammer-humiliated-scots-in-champions-cup-quarter-final\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Unstoppable Leinster give Glasgow Warriors the Harlequins treatment as Irish province hammer humiliated Scots in Champions Cup quarter-final<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"px-3 xs:px-4 mt-3 mb-2 font-semibold leading-snug text-lg text-title\"><strong>\ud83d\udc49 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/leinster-v-glasgow-warriors-five-takeaways-as-sam-prendergast-gives-emphatic-lions-statement-but-jacques-nienabers-defence-the-star-attraction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leinster v Glasgow Warriors: Five takeaways as Sam Prendergast gives \u2019emphatic\u2019 Lions statement but Jacques Nienaber\u2019s defence the \u2018star attraction\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Are Leinster better than Ireland?<\/p>\n<p>Smith won\u2019t be mulling over the margin of the defeat as Glasgow\u2019s attention turns to defending their United Rugby Championship title.<\/p>\n<p>He admits this kind of defeat happens once a season and his side simply came up against a better team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe final score as a reflection of the game looks big but if you are chasing 33-0 at half-time, you are going to take chances in areas of the field where you shouldn\u2019t and that leads to other points,\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce a year or once a season, with a good team, blips like this happen and unfortunately for us, we came up against an extremely good team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey scored 62 points against Harlequins last week and now they have scored 114 points in two games. They are doing something really well and that\u2019s where the compliment sits tonight.<\/p>\n<p>\ud83d\udc49\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetrugby.com\/news\/leinster-player-ratings-jordie-barrett-so-close-to-perfect-as-overseas-superstars-add-new-dimension-to-staggeringly-good-irish-side\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leinster player ratings: Jordie Barrett \u2018so close to perfect\u2019 as overseas superstars add \u2018new dimension\u2019 to staggeringly good Irish side<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to brush the result off, we didn\u2019t not rock up, we just got beaten by a very strong team that is so far ahead of every club in the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a suggestion that Leinster are actually a better team than Ireland and a notion that Smith doesn\u2019t disagree with, pointing to the club\u2019s two international recruits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a comment last week that they are better than Ireland, you replace Bundee Aki with Jordie Barrett it\u2019s different and then you have a two-time World Cup winner in the locks [RG Snyman],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s impressive, I think Leinster demands results like this with the quality and depth they have in the squad and if they don\u2019t; then it is them who are not performing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat second squad went to South Africa and picked up points against full-strength South African teams, we need to put it into perspective. Have we missed players tonight? Yes, but that is not an excuse.
