It looks very much like Florian Wirtz is joining Liverpool<\/strong><\/a>; it\u2019s a pretty big deal.<\/p>\n

But do you know what is an even bigger deal: What shirt number he will wear. And my word, we have been on a journey with that one.<\/p>\n

On May 23, when it became clear that Wirtz might actually join Liverpool, the Liverpool<\/strong>\u00a0Echo<\/strong> told us:<\/p>\n

The No. 9 of Ian Rush? The 10 of John Barnes and Sadio Mane?<\/p>\n

Nope. The No. 23 of Jamie Carragher. This is described by the Echo as the \u2018perfect gift\u2019. To be fair, it\u2019s better than socks.<\/p>\n

By May 26, the Liverpool Echo<\/strong> were back with another breathless shirt update. Odd as we had already been told that the \u2018perfect gift\u2019 was available.<\/p>\n

Florian Wirtz could be denied dream Liverpool shirt number but second option available<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The No. 23 is being ripped off his back?<\/p>\n

Nope, his \u2018dream shirt number\u2019 is now deemed to be the No. 10, and he will be \u2018denied\u2019 by there being no No. 10 available. In other news, Mediawatch has been denied its dream lunch.<\/p>\n

So is the \u2018perfect gift\u2019 of the No. 23 shirt the \u2018second option\u2019?<\/p>\n

As for the \u2018major catch\u2019\u2026it\u2019s less a \u2018major catch\u2019 and more of a \u2018major attempt to give some credence to some shite about Alexis Mac Allister joining Real Madrid<\/strong><\/a>\u2018.<\/p>\n

By now, the idea that Wirtz will choose the No. 27 has basically become fact, despite him not yet signing for Liverpool and making no known statement that he is particularly attached to the number.<\/p>\n
