{"id":140347,"date":"2025-05-29T03:13:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T03:13:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/140347\/"},"modified":"2025-05-29T03:13:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T03:13:09","slug":"eu-officially-retires-its-no-cherry-picking-brexit-line-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/140347\/","title":{"rendered":"EU officially retires its \u2018no cherry-picking\u2019 Brexit line \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Charles Grant, director of the Centre for European Reform, said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/brexit-cherry-picking-is-inevitable-but-it-will-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cherry-picking line<\/a> had been \u201ca product of the strained relationship that followed the referendum, and the EU\u2019s concern that other countries should not follow the U.K.\u2019s example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is that where there is mutual interest in the two sides moving closer \u2014 as there is on [sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agri-food rules] and energy trading \u2014 the EU is happy for the British to pick a cherry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be other examples in the future of the U.K. de facto moving back into sectors of the single market, though it will have to accept dynamic alignment with EU rules in each of these areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul Adamson, chair of the EU-UK Forum and a longtime Brexit watcher, added: \u201cIt might not seem obvious at the moment, but the summit may well have paved the way to embed a new \u2018win-win\u2019 approach to future talks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next steps<\/p>\n<p>The roadmap agreed at the summit spells out the issues where both sides want to move closer \u2014 and just how much closer.
