Their full names weren\u2019t released in line with German privacy rules.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe spying operation presumably served to prepare further intelligence operations in Germany, possibly even leading to killing,\u201d the German Federal Prosecutor\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">German prosecutors said at the beginning of May 2024, Vardges I. received an order from a Russian intelligence agency to spy on a man living in Germany who fought in Ukraine&#8217;s armed forces after Russia&#8217;s full-scale invasion in February 2022. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">To do this, Vardges I. recruited Robert A. and Arman S., who are accused of trying to lure the man to a meeting in a cafe in downtown Frankfurt with the aim of identifying him and gathering further information about him. Because the man had previously been in touch with German police, no meeting ever took place, the Federal Prosecutor&#8217;s Office said, adding that the three men remain in custody. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The charges against the men, filed May 16, are the latest in a series of cases across Europe where Ukrainians and other nationals are accused of working on behalf of Russia\u2019s intelligence services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In May, German prosecutors said <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-ukraine-russia-packages-arson-explosives-arrests-c032a532ffc94585d70501ff6a4d4bda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three Ukrainians were arrested in Germany and Switzerland<\/a> on suspicion of agreeing to send parcels containing explosive or incendiary devices from Germany to Ukraine, apparently at the behest of people acting for Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In April 2024, two <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-russia-spying-sabotage-ukraine-arrests-927490085e244ba72d84e4a374ee198b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">German-Russian men were arrested in Germany<\/a> on suspicion of espionage, one of them accused of agreeing to carry out attacks on potential targets including U.S. military facilities in hopes of sabotaging aid <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-chernihiv-missile-strike-drones-2eaf2f93ad447bce3ea2d8f9631c554b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">for Ukraine<\/a>, prosecutors said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Western officials have accused Russia and its proxies of staging <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-war-europe-hybrid-campaign-d61887dd3ec6151adf354c5bd3e6273e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dozens of attacks<\/a> ranging from arson and sabotage to cyberattacks and espionage since Moscow\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Russia has previously been accused of trying to kill people in Germany who have a connection to the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In July 2024, Western officials said <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-russia-threats-report-rheinmetall-plot-2cee42e9f9f6940eb960b0b052e3e670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a plot was uncovered to kill Armin Papperger<\/a>, CEO of <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-ammunition-factory-scholz-nato-788b674a47732f4d7bb5dd3f097aeb00\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defense company Rheinmetall<\/a> which provides weapons to Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">In 2019, a Russian national, Vadim Krasikov, was convicted in Germany of killing a Georgian citizen who had fought Russian troops in Chechnya.
