GEORGE RUSSELL will not rest until he becomes world champion.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And he has Jude Bellingham<\/a> and Harry Kane<\/a> in his corner \u2014 who both know a thing or two about goals.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old from Kings Lynn has never been one to be daunted by big reputations.<\/p>\n

Russell<\/a> is back in Bahrain this weekend \u2014 scene of his sensational 2020 Mercedes<\/a> debut as a stand-in for Lewis Hamilton<\/a>, where he was only denied victory by a pit-stop blunder and a slow puncture.<\/p>\n

Handed a permanent drive by the team in 2022, he went wheel-to-wheel with \u00adseven-time world champ Hamilton during their three years as team-mates.<\/p>\n

And he told Max Verstappen<\/a> to stick it where the sun doesn\u2019t shine after the pair were hauled before stewards<\/a> following a feisty Qatar<\/a> Grand Prix in December.<\/p>\n

Having done the hard miles with a struggling Williams team before making his mark alongside Hamilton, Russell now has the biggest opportunity of his career as he leads the iconic Mercedes team.<\/p>\n

There is still a feeling he remains in the shadow of fellow Brits Hamilton, now fulfilling his ambition of driving for Ferrari<\/a>, and Lando Norris<\/a>, this season\u2019s F\u200a1 world championship leader after four races.<\/p>\n

But Russell told SunSport: \u201cI\u2019m not underestimated by the people that know me in this paddock.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe paddock knows what I\u2019m capable of and that\u2019s why I remind myself of my very first race with Mercedes five years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have been team-mates with the greatest of all time for three years.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd my stats speak for themselves, so I don\u2019t think anybody in the sport should underestimate me.\u201d<\/p>\n

George Russell furiously hits back at Max Verstappen after the F1 world champion’s stinging criticism of him <\/p>\n

Wolves fan Russell has taken inspiration from his friendships with England<\/a> football<\/a> heroes Bellingham and Kane.<\/p>\n

Bellingham gifted the driver with a bespoke \u2018George 63\u2019 Real Madrid shirt, marking his car number, earlier this year.<\/p>\n

Russell said: \u201cI\u2019ve met Harry, I did some work with one of his charities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI always keep up to date with the Bayern Munich<\/a> scores and his personal stats \u2014 and I\u2019m desperate for them to win the league.<\/p>\n

\u201cMe and Bellingham started to get to know each other recently.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a great guy, we have an \u00adadidas connection and I\u2019ve promised to get him to a race this year.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Kane and Bellingham hope to land England\u2019s first trophy since 1966 after a string of near misses, Russell will not rest until he has secured Formula One\u2019s ultimate honour.<\/p>\n

Asked if he is satisfied with his progress since his Mercedes drive, he admitted: \u201cYes and no because I want to be a world champion, I want to be fighting every year.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it would be irrational of me to say I\u2019m not where I want to be, because in these past five years I could not have fought for a world championship.<\/p>\n

He admitted Carmen had no idea who he was when they first metCredit: Instagram<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t have the machinery to do that, the same way as Lando for two years did not have the machinery and now he does.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell keeps his circle small but his rock is his fashion influencer girlfriend Carmen Montero Mundt, who has been with him every step of the way for the past five years.<\/p>\n

Montero Mundt, 26, who hails from Jerez in southern Spain<\/a> \u2014 where Russell raced many times in his younger years \u2014 was supposed to meet a friend of his for a date in London<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n

Russell revealed: \u201cMy mate couldn\u2019t make it, so I thought I\u2019ll swing along to see how it goes.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe told me she\u2019s from the south of Spain and she wouldn\u2019t ever expect someone to know the small place she\u2019s from.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew exactly where she was from, so it was quite coincidental.\u201d<\/p>\n

Montero Mundt attends nearly every race with Russell and was by his side when he was left hyper-ventilating after overheating in the Singapore Grand Prix last year.<\/p>\n

Russell lost NINE POUNDS in the extreme heat conditions during the race and had to recover in an ice bath afterwards.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI\u2019m so fortunate with Carmen because we met before the craziness of F\u200a1. We met organically and it wasn\u2019t a set up.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe didn\u2019t know who I was, she didn\u2019t know F\u200a1 and wasn\u2019t even bothered by any of that. She is a very down-to-earth individual and we share values.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s such a hard worker, wants to achieve so much and she really recognises what it takes in my position to be at this level.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving her on this journey means an awful lot to me because even though we are living our dream it can be a lonely lifestyle.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving somebody to help you disconnect from that actually brings performance as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell is out of contract at the end of the season but is in no rush to put pen to paper on a new deal.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI know that I\u2019m going to be in this sport next year and I only want to focus on the performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf a driver starts stressing about his contract it shows they may not have the confidence in their ability.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m certain I have no concerns about my contract situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell is going about his business impressively enough this season.<\/p>\n

He trails third-place Oscar Piastri by just four points in the standings and could do with another big drive in Bahrain to close in on the top-two of Norris and Verstappen.<\/p>\n

And in a season which is already shaping up to be the most open for years, there is every reason to think Russell can fulfil his world title dream.<\/p>\n
