{"id":142226,"date":"2025-05-29T19:57:09","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T19:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/142226\/"},"modified":"2025-05-29T19:57:09","modified_gmt":"2025-05-29T19:57:09","slug":"bank-of-england-governor-urges-deeper-ties-with-eu-to-minimise-brexit-impact-bank-of-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/142226\/","title":{"rendered":"Bank of England governor urges deeper ties with EU to \u2018minimise\u2019 Brexit impact | Bank of England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Andrew Bailey has urged the UK government to deepen ties with the EU, as he warned a breakdown in global trade would make it harder for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/bankofenglandgovernor\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bank of England<\/a> to control inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">In a speech in Dublin on Thursday, the Bank\u2019s governor said a stronger relationship between London and Brussels could \u201cminimise negative effects\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/eu-referendum\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> on trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Calling for closer cooperation on financial services as a priority, Bailey said government efforts to reset relations with the EU were a \u201cwelcome step forward\u201d after the UK\u2019s formal departure from the 27-country bloc in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Bailey said, as a civil servant, he took no position on Brexit, and he understood there could be other reasons why voters backed leaving the EU, but he said the evidence showed that the UK\u2019s changing trade relationship had \u201cweighed\u201d on Britain\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThis does not mean that Brexit is wrong, because there can be other reasons for it, but it does suggest, I think powerfully, that we should do all we can to minimise negative effects on trade,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">The Bank\u2019s governor has previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/may\/09\/bank-of-england-governor-andrew-bailey-eu-trade-rebuild\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called for the UK to strike deeper ties with Brussels<\/a> to strengthen the economy, ahead of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/may\/19\/deal-with-eu-will-make-food-cheaper-and-add-9bn-to-uk-economy-says-no-10\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">deal<\/a> agreed between Keir Starmer and the EU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ursula-von-der-leyen\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/a> in London earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">On a day of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/may\/28\/us-court-blocks-trump-tariffs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dramatic developments<\/a> in Donald Trump\u2019s increasingly erratic international trade war, Bailey said tougher barriers to trade made the economy less efficient and could therefore stoke inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">UK inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/may\/21\/uk-inflation-jumps-higher-than-expected-energy-bills\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jumped by more than expected in April<\/a>, to 3.5% from 2.6% in March, after sharp rises in water bills, energy costs and council tax. The Bank of England targets 2% inflation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">Bailey warned that simmering geopolitical tensions and the fragmentation of international trade suggested the lengthy, complex manufacturing supply chains of the past were unlikely to return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-16w5gq9\">\u201cThe inevitable conclusion is that we cannot assume the supply sides of our economies behave as efficiently as they did before Covid.
