The court ordered that the challenged tariff orders be vacated.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Trump administration filed a notice of appeal shortly after the judgment, and an appeals court\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/29\/blocked-trump-tariffs-trade-court-appeal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reinstated the levies<\/a>\u00a0on Thursday afternoon. The administration said it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/29\/trump-court-international-trade-tariffs-miller.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could ask the Supreme Court<\/a>\u00a0as early as Friday to pause the federal court&#8217;s original ruling if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Investors are keeping a close watch on Tokyo&#8217;s core inflation reading\u00a0for April\u00a0to assess how it may affect the Bank of Japan&#8217;s decision whether to hike rates again this year amid the ongoing tariff uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>The reading, which captures consumer costs excluding fresh food,\u00a0moved up to 3.6% from a year ago,\u00a0its highest level since January 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The reading, which captures consumer costs excluding fresh food, was expected to rise 3.5%, according to economists polled by Reuters, compared to 3.4% the month prior.<\/p>\n<p>Japan&#8217;s benchmark\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.N225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikkei 225<\/a>\u00a0started the day 1.55% lower while the broader Topix index fell 1%.<\/p>\n<p>In South Korea, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.KS11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kospi<\/a>\u00a0index opened 0.4% lower,\u00a0while the small-cap Kosdaq moved down 0.44%.<\/p>\n<p>Over in Australia, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.AXJO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S&amp;P\/ASX 200<\/a>\u00a0dropped 0.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Futures for Hong Kong&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.HSI\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hang Seng index<\/a> stood at 23,297, pointing to a weaker open compared to the HSI&#8217;s last close of 23,573.38.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. futures were little changed as investors await more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/05\/29\/stock-market-today-live-updates-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trade news and fresh inflation data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Overnight stateside, all three key benchmarks on Wall Street rose, even as gains were curtailed by caution around the court rulings on Trump&#8217;s &#8220;reciprocal tariffs.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.SPX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">S&amp;P 500<\/a>\u00a0moved up thanks to strong moves in chipmaker\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/NVDA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nvidia<\/a>. The broad-based index ended the day higher by 0.4% at 5,912.17 despite climbing as much as 0.9%.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/.IXIC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nasdaq Composite<\/a>\u00a0advanced 0.39% to 19,175.87, also well off its highest intraday gain of 1.5%.
