{"id":143724,"date":"2025-05-30T09:20:13","date_gmt":"2025-05-30T09:20:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/143724\/"},"modified":"2025-05-30T09:20:13","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T09:20:13","slug":"glasgows-new-peregrine-falcon-chicks-named-after-iconic-still-game-characters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/143724\/","title":{"rendered":"Glasgow&#8217;s new peregrine falcon chicks named after iconic Still Game characters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The chicks hatched on April 27 in a nest high above University of Glasgow\u2019s iconic Gilbert Scott Building<\/p>\n<p>09:54, 30 May 2025Updated 09:55, 30 May 2025<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1_peregrine-falcon.png\" alt=\"A picture of peregrine falcon chicks Jack and Victor\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Two peregrine falcon chicks born at the University of Glasgow have been named Jack and Victor(Image: University of Glasgow)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Two <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/wildlife\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"peregrine falcon chicksLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">peregrine falcon chicks<\/a> born atop the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/universities-and-colleges\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"UniversityLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">University<\/a> of Glasgow\u2019s iconic Gilbert Scott Building have been given names that pay tribute to one of Scotland\u2019s best-loved comedy duos, Jack and Victor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">The fluffy newcomers hatched on April 27 in a nest high up in the tower that dominates the skyline above Kelvingrove Park and can be seen from as far as Dumbarton Road in Partick, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.glasgowlive.co.uk\/news\/glasgow-news\/glasgow-university-peregrine-falcon-chicks-31743654\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Glasgow LiveLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow Live<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Their proud parents, affectionately named Bonnie and Clyde, return to the Gothic building each spring since 2022 and have become favourites among local birdwatchers.<\/p>\n<p>Content cannot be displayed without consent<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">On 21 May, members of the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/glasgow\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"GlasgowLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Glasgow<\/a> Peregrine Project scaled the tower to ring the chicks, weigh them, take DNA samples, and install a new nest camera.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">During the check-up, they also retrieved an unhatched egg, which they believe was accidentally pierced by a parent\u2019s talon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Sharing the chosen names on social media, the University of Glasgow wrote: \u201cSay hello to Jack and Victor, the new additions to the UofG Falcon family.<\/p>\n<p>Content cannot be displayed without consent<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bonnie and Clyde, a pair of peregrine falcons who return to nest atop the Gilbert Scott Building each spring, have welcomed their new chicks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cLast week, the chicks were ringed, weighed, and DNA swabbed, and officially named Jack and Victor in true Glasgow style. The chicks will feature on Landward on BBC Scotland on 12 June.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Bonnie and Clyde themselves were named in 2024 after the university invited staff and students to suggest names for the breeding pair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Over 300 suggestions poured in, with &#8216;Bonnie&#8217; chosen as a nod to &#8216;Bonnie Scotland&#8217;, and &#8216;Clyde&#8217; referencing the River Clyde.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Peregrine falcons are the fastest <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/animals\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"animalsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">animals<\/a> on Earth, capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 miles per hour as they dive to catch prey.
